Cancer incidence amongst UK firefighters

Summary: Firefighters face an increased risk of cancer due to exposure to chemicals released from fires. The UK Firefighter Contamination Survey found that over 4% of surveyed firefighters had been diagnosed with cancer, with a significantly higher cancer rate among younger firefighters. Fire toxins not only contaminate firefighters' personal protective equipment (PPE), but also spread to fire stations.

Blood pressure surge with alarm is reduced after exercise and diet intervention in firefighters

Summary: The study aimed to measure the blood pressure surge during alarm in firefighters and determine whether it can be reduced through a 6-week tactical exercise and Mediterranean diet intervention. The results showed a decrease in the magnitude of blood pressure surge after intervention, as well as improvements in clinical and central blood pressure levels. In addition, levels of oxidative stress markers superoxide dismutase and nitric oxide also improved with exercise and diet intervention. These findings have important implications for the benefit of short-term lifestyle changes in reducing the alarm stress response in first responders.

Risk Factors for Cardiometabolic Disease in Professional Firefighters

Summary: Firefighters often suffer from cardiometabolic disease (CMD). Obesity, poor fitness, and unfavorable blood lipid levels are risk factors for CMD. This study found that waist circumference, triglycerides, and cardiorespiratory fitness are important factors related to markers of insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation.

Breakfast in Latin America: Evaluation of Nutrient and Food Group Intake Toward a Nutrient-Based Recommendation

Summary: Little is known about breakfast habits in Latin America. This study evaluated the nutritional composition of breakfast in the Latin American population and proposed recommendations for a balanced breakfast. The findings showed that breakfast contributed to protein, carbohydrate, and B vitamin intakes, but also to higher intakes of added sugar and total and saturated fat. The proposed recommendations aim to maintain the nutrient density of the highest-quality breakfast while addressing concerns about certain nutrients.

Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in a population of French firefighters

Summary: Firefighters in Loire department face cardiovascular risk factors such as overweight, obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking. There is no significant difference in the prevalence of risk factors between career firefighters and volunteers. Obesity remains the most common risk factor among firefighters, especially those with high cardiovascular risk.

The impact of shift work on the well-being and subjective levels of alertness and sleepiness in firefighters and rescue service workers

Summary: This study investigated the effects of shift work on sleep, health behaviors, and cognitive functions of Polish rescue service workers. Paramedics working 12-hour shifts showed lower average sleep duration and quality, and fewer health behaviors compared to firefighters and daytime workers. However, no differences were found in cognitive test performance among the groups.

Association between shift work or long working hours with metabolic syndrome: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies

Summary: This meta-analysis found a significant association between shift work and metabolic syndrome, while the link between long working hours and MetS was inconclusive. There was also a nonlinear relationship between the number of years of shift work and the risk of MetS. Health outcomes of psychosocial stress within firefighters: A systematic review of the research landscape

Summary: The research focused on the impact of psychosocial stressors on firefighters' health and well-being. Findings showed that firefighters experienced various stressors, such as interpersonal conflict and organizational fairness concerns, leading to outcomes like depression-suicidality, non-depressive mental health problems, burnout, alcohol use disorders, sleep quality, and physiological parameters and somatic disorders. Interventions should aim to promote self-esteem, enhance self-efficacy, and strengthen social support to address these psychosocial risk factors.
