The Relative Validity and Reproducibility of Food Frequency Questionnaires in the China Kadoorie Biobank Study

Chenxi Qin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of qualitative and quantitative food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) in the Chinese population. The results showed that most food items in both the qualitative and quantitative FFQs had acceptable or good validity and reproducibility in the CKB study. However, dried vegetables and carbonated soft drinks performed poorly, indicating the need for modification and validation in future research.

Consumption of takeaway and delivery meals is associated with increased BMI and percent fat among UK Biobank participants

Ahmad A. Albalawi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between consumption of different types of meals and BMI or percent body fat. The results showed that individuals with higher BMI and percent body fat were more likely to consume takeaway and delivery meals, while those with lower BMI and percent body fat were more likely to consume homecooked meals. Consumption of fast-food/cafe meals was not consistently associated with BMI or percent body fat. The direction of causality cannot be determined from this cross-sectional study.

Association between Dietary Diversity Score and Metabolic Syndrome in Korean Adults: A Community-Based Prospective Cohort Study

Jiyeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that there is a gender-specific association between dietary diversity score (DDS) and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). A higher DDS is inversely associated with the consumption of grains but positively associated with the consumption of fruits, non-salted vegetables, fish, and milk. Furthermore, a higher DDS is significantly associated with a lower risk of MetS, abdominal obesity, and hypertriglyceridemia in men.

Xiaofei Luo et al.

Summary: Based on a cross-sectional study, we found a high prevalence of NAFLD in medical examination adults aged 18-59 years in China. The study results suggest that high salt intake is associated with an increased risk of NAFLD, while sufficient dietary diversity is protective against NAFLD.

Eating behaviors and health-related quality of life: A scoping review

Octavio Pano et al.

Summary: This scoping review examines the effects of modifiable eating behaviors on the health-related quality of life in patients with non-communicable diseases. It found that diet quality is a commonly studied topic, while aspects such as eating schedules, eating locations, and food insecurity receive less attention. Neglecting these aspects may limit the full potential of nutrition for health and well-being.

Summary: Studies have found that food variety has a significant small to medium effect on intake, with greater variety leading to increased consumption. Variety is confirmed to be a robust driver of food intake. However, high heterogeneity and risk of bias in studies demonstrate methodological limitations and emphasize the need for well-powered randomized controlled studies.
