Plant-derived nootropics and human cognition: A systematic review

Cristina Lorca et al.

Summary: This systematic review provides state-of-the-art information on the proven and unproven effects of plant-derived nootropics (PDNs) on human cognition in conditions of health and disease. The findings suggest that Ginkgo biloba is most relevant to perceptual and motor functions, Bacopa monnieri improves language, learning, and memory, Withania somnifera modulates anxiety and social-related cognitions, and caffeine enhances attention and executive functions.

Effects of caffeine, methylliberine, and theacrine on vigilance, marksmanship, and hemodynamic responses in tactical personnel: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Harry P. Cintineo et al.

Summary: The study found similar benefits in reaction time (RT) during a vigilance task between caffeine (CAF) containing 300 mg and a combination of caffeine, methylliberine, and theacrine (CMT) compared to placebo (PLA), although CAF resulted in slightly less favorable hemodynamic changes. This research is the first to show that the combined effects of caffeine, methylliberine, and theacrine were comparable to double the caffeine dose alone in improving RT without significantly increasing diastolic blood pressure above placebo in tactical personnel.

How does caffeine influence memory? Drug, experimental, and demographic factors

Ruo-Chong Zhang et al.

Summary: Studies have found that caffeine can affect performance in memory tasks, but the evidence is limited, especially in memory performance beyond improved reaction times. Drug factors, experimental factors, and demographic factors may all play a role in modulating the effects of caffeine on memory, with inconsistent findings and potential interactions with various aspects such as dose, source, experimental design, and individual differences.
