Rheological Issues on Oropharyngeal Dysphagia

Crispulo Gallegos et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence for the relevance of rheology in the design of fluids for the diagnosis and management of dysphagia. However, there is currently a lack of objective viscosity levels that can predict a safe swallowing process. Recent studies have also highlighted the potential contribution of elongational flows during swallowing.

Costs of post-stroke dysphagia during acute hospitalization from a health-insurance perspective

Bendix Labeit et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between oropharyngeal dysphagia after stroke and acute hospitalization costs. The study found that age, therapeutic interventions, duration of artificial ventilation, length of hospital stay, and severe dysphagia were independent factors associated with increased health insurance expenditures. Therefore, therapies targeting severe dysphagia may have the potential to reduce healthcare costs.

The global prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia in different populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Fatemeh Rajati et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis standardized the global prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) in different populations. The results showed that OD is highly prevalent in different populations and its prevalence has been increasing in recent years. Appropriate strategies should be implemented to reduce the prevalence of OD by identifying its causes, monitoring at all levels, and providing feedback to hospitals.

Sarcopenic Dysphagia, Malnutrition, and Oral Frailty in Elderly: A Comprehensive Review

Alessandro de Sire et al.

Summary: Frailty is a common condition in the elderly and is closely associated with a higher risk of fragility fractures, hospitalization, and mortality. Sarcopenia and dysphagia are common pathological conditions in frail older people and often coexist, leading to dehydration and malnutrition. Poor oral health is also closely related to the aging process and can affect the immune system, wound healing, and the ability to maintain proper oral hygiene in older people. Therefore, poor oral health can lead to malnutrition and frailty.

Proposal for a Standard Protocol to Assess the Rheological Behavior of Thickening Products for Oropharyngeal Dysphagia

Mireia Bolivar-Prados et al.

Summary: A rheological protocol was designed and validated to accurately measure the shear viscosity of thickening products and assess the impact of oral and pharyngeal factors on therapeutic effect. The study showed that different laboratories can obtain similar and accurate measurements using this protocol.

The Hydration Status of Adult Patients with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia and the Effect of Thickened Fluid Therapy on Fluid Intake and Hydration: Results of Two Parallel Systematic and Scoping Reviews

Paula Vinas et al.

Summary: This article aims to assess the hydration status in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) and the effect of thickened fluid (TF) therapy on it. Results show that dehydration is a common complication in OD and TF therapy has a positive effect on hydration status, although strict monitoring of fluid intake is necessary.

Advances in the Treatment of Dysphagia in Neurological Disorders: A Review of Current Evidence and Future Considerations

Ivy Cheng et al.

Summary: Traditionally, dysphagia treatments are either compensatory or rehabilitative, but recent advancements in technology have led to the development of novel treatment methods and an increase in randomized controlled clinical trials. While the quality of evidence for dysphagia treatments has improved, critical issues such as treatment regimen heterogeneity and long-term effects still need to be addressed in future clinical trials.
