Relations between the Consumption of Fatty or Lean Fish and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and All-Cause Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Annalisa Giosue et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the association between the consumption of fatty fish or lean fish and the risk of cardiovascular events. The results showed that fatty fish consumption was inversely associated with coronary heart disease incidence, coronary heart disease mortality, and total mortality, while lean fish consumption did not show such associations. The study findings suggest that the health benefits of fish consumption are mainly driven by the consumption of fatty fish.

Japanese-Style Diet and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Masayuki Shirota et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate that the Japanese-style diet and characteristic Japanese foods have beneficial effects on reducing the mortality risk of cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and heart disease. Adhering to the Japanese-style diet and increasing the consumption of vegetables, fruits, fish, green tea, and milk is associated with a lower risk of these diseases, while higher salt intake is associated with an increased risk.

Associations of Fish Consumption With Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality Among Individuals With or Without Vascular Disease From 58 Countries

Deepa Mohan et al.

Summary: A pooled analysis of 4 cohort studies showed that a minimal fish intake of 175 g (approximately 2 servings) weekly is associated with lower risk of major cardiovascular disease and mortality among patients with prior cardiovascular disease but not in general populations. Therefore, the consumption of fish (especially oily fish) should be evaluated in randomized trials of clinical outcomes among people with vascular disease.

Association of Seafood Consumption and Mercury Exposure With Cardiovascular and All-Cause Mortality Among US Adults

Yangbo Sun et al.

Summary: In this cohort study of US adults, seafood consumption and mercury exposure at current levels were not significantly associated with the risk of all-cause or CVD-related mortality. These findings may help guide future public health recommendations on mercury exposure, seafood consumption, and cardiovascular health.

Intake of Fish and Marine n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: A Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Lan Jiang et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found an inverse association between fish consumption and CVD mortality risk, as well as a reduced risk of CVD mortality with higher intake of marine n-3 PUFA. Increasing daily intake of fish and marine n-3 PUFA was associated with a decrease in the risk of CVD mortality.
