Frailty, mortality, and health care utilization after liver transplantation: From the Multicenter Functional Assessment in Liver Transplantation (FrAILT) Study

Jennifer C. Lai et al.

Summary: Frail patients who undergo liver transplantation have a higher risk of post-transplantation death and increased healthcare utilization compared to nonfrail patients. Targeting pre-transplant frailty may improve post-transplant outcomes and reduce resource utilization.

Summary: PROMs can marginally improve the prediction of 30-day readmissions for patients with cirrhosis. Poor social support and disability are associated with readmissions and may be important targets for future interventions.

Frailty is associated with increased risk of cirrhosis disease progression and death

Sarah Wang et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between the Liver Frailty Index (LFI) and the risk of disease progression, mortality, and unplanned hospitalizations in patients with cirrhosis. The findings showed that frailty was an independent predictor of cirrhosis progression or death and unplanned hospitalization across patients with compensated and decompensated cirrhosis. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential of slowing cirrhosis disease progression by addressing frailty.

Are MELD and MELDNa Still Reliable Tools to Predict Mortality on the Liver Transplant Waiting List?

Marta Tejedor et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation is the only cure for end-stage liver disease, but the limited availability of donor organs and increasing number of potential recipients pose challenges. The use of MELD and MELDNa to prioritize patients on the waiting list has resulted in reduced mortality, but concerns have been raised about their accuracy due to changing recipient profiles. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the advantages, limitations, and potential alternatives to MELD and MELDNa, as well as future options for increasing the donor pool and improving donor-recipient matching.

Summary: This study reports on the symptoms, quality of life, and ICHOM IBD outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The results illustrate the therapeutic deficit in current care, and demonstrate that patient-reported outcome data can be collected continuously with little burden on healthcare professionals.

CLIF-SOFA and CLIF-C scores for the prognostication of acute-on-chronic liver failure and acute decompensation of cirrhosis: A systematic review

Ebrahim Rashed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of the EASL-CLIF definition for ACLF and the ability of CLIF-SOFA, CLIF-C ACLF, and CLIF-C AD scores for prognosticating ACLF or AD. The findings showed that CLIF-SOFA score surpassed other models in predicting short-term mortality in ACLF patients. CLIF-SOFA, CLIF-C ACLF, and CLIF-C AD scores are accurate in predicting short-term and long-term mortality.

Liver cirrhosis

Pere Gines et al.

Summary: Cirrhosis is a widespread disease with various causes, leading to portal hypertension, systemic inflammation, and liver failure. Summary: COVID-19 patients with cirrhosis have a higher proportion of severe illness and mortality. MELD and CRUB65 scores at hospital admission may predict COVID-19 severity, while Child-Pugh and CRUB65 scores are highly associated with non-survival among these patients.
