The gut microbiome and hypertension

Joanne A. O'Donnell et al.

Summary: A large body of evidence has shown that the gut microbiome plays a role in regulating blood pressure through various mechanisms, including changes in gene pathways and the production of beneficial or detrimental metabolites. Dysbiosis in the gut microbiome can result in inflammation and disruption of the intestinal barrier, activating mechanisms associated with blood pressure regulation. Challenges in gut microbiome research include minimizing confounding factors and establishing causality, but new approaches such as clinical trials and computational methods offer potential for leveraging the microbiome to lower blood pressure.

Gut microbiome modulates the effects of a personalised postprandial-targeting (PPT) diet on cardiometabolic markers: a diet intervention in pre-diabetes

Orly Ben-Yacov et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the interaction between dietary modifications, microbiome composition, and host metabolic responses in a personalized postprandial-targeting (PPT) diet versus a Mediterranean (MED) diet in pre-diabetes. The results show that the PPT diet has a more significant impact on gut microbiome composition compared to the MED diet. Additionally, specific dietary changes are associated with changes in microbiome composition, and causal mediation analysis identifies nine microbial species that partially mediate the association between dietary changes and clinical outcomes.

Comparing the gut microbiome of obese, African American, older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment

Andrew McLeod et al.

Summary: Those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have a different gut microbiome compared to healthy individuals, and this difference also exists in individuals with risk factors for dementia. In a study of older, obese, primarily female, African American adults, it was found that the gut microbiota profiles of MCI patients were different from the controls. Specific microbial taxa abundances were also different between the two groups, but these differences disappeared after adjusting for oxidative stress and systemic inflammation markers. Cognitive scores were positively correlated with the levels of Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium associated with reduced inflammation. This study suggests that gut microbial composition may play a role in inflammation, oxidative stress, and MCI in individuals at high risk for dementia.

Ascertaining minimal clinically meaningful changes in symptoms of depression rated by the 15-item Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale

Ingo Haase et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the clinical relevance of changes in the CES-D-15 scale among patients with depression symptoms, with the MCID represented by an average reduction of approximately 11 points. Higher baseline scores required larger changes to reach a clinically important difference, and it is suggested to report the percentage of patients who have reached the MCID in evaluating treatment outcomes. Further examinations in other patient populations and with different anchor criteria are needed for verification.

Acute and persistent effects of commonly used antibiotics on the gut microbiome and resistome in healthy adults

Winston E. Anthony et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the dynamics of the gut microbiota in healthy adult volunteers before, during, and 6 months after receiving antibiotic treatment. The results showed that antibiotics led to changes in species diversity, resistome, and metabolic output, and delayed the recovery of species richness. A subset of volunteers experienced a persistent reduction in microbiome diversity after antibiotics.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a common metabolic disease, can be effectively managed through dietary approaches such as the Mediterranean diet (MD) and the very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD). This study found that VLCKD had more significant effects on body composition and gut microbiota compared to MD.

Effects of Diet-Modulated Autologous Fecal Microbiota Transplantation on Weight Regain

Ehud Rinott et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of diet-modulated autologous fecal microbiota transplantation (aFMT) for treatment of weight regain after the weight-loss phase. The results showed that in the green-Mediterranean diet group, aFMT significantly reduced weight regain and waist circumference gain, improved insulin rebound, and induced significant changes in gut microbiome composition. The green-Mediterranean diet also preserved weight-loss-associated specific bacteria and microbial metabolic pathways after the aFMT procedure.
