Altering the viscoelastic properties of mucus-grown Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms affects antibiotic susceptibility

Kaitlyn R. Rouillard et al.

Summary: The viscoelastic properties of biofilms are correlated with their susceptibility to mechanical and chemical stress. In muco-obstructive pulmonary diseases (MOPD), the airway environment promotes robust biofilm formation. The composition of biofilms, including polysaccharides and DNA, influence responses to antibiotics and phagocytosis. Modulating the rheology of biofilms can compromise structural integrity and increase antibiotic susceptibility, which may improve the treatment of chronic respiratory infections in MOPD.

PHYSIOLOGY AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF HUMAN AIRWAY MUCUS

David B. Hill et al.

Summary: The mucus clearance system is the dominant mechanical defense system of the human lung, clearing mucus through cilia and airflow. Mucus transport rates are heavily dependent on mucus concentration and can be accurately predicted by a model. Fluid for mucus hydration is generated through epithelial fluid transport. Diseases can cause mucus hyperconcentration and obstructive plaques.

Lipid Nanoparticles-From Liposomes to mRNA Vaccine Delivery, a Landscape of Research Diversity and Advancement

Rumiana Tenchov et al.

Summary: Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have become promising vehicles in the pharmaceutical industry for delivering various therapeutics, particularly highlighted in the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. LNPs exhibit versatility and physical stability, allowing for targeted delivery of therapeutic drugs to specific locations within the body. Liposomes, an early version of LNPs, have already been widely applied in medical practice.
