Polypropylene and Graphene Nanocomposites: Effects of Selected 2D-Nanofiller's Plate Sizes on Fundamental Physicochemical Properties

Sarat Chandra Patra et al.

Summary: The authors developed a nanocomposite by using a melt mixing method to combine polypropylene (PP) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The study found that all three sizes of GNPs could enhance the mechanical strength of the polymer composite. Increasing the size of the nanofiller decreased tensile strength and modulus, increased flexural strength and modulus, and increased impact strength. Graphene improved the crystalline phases and structure of PP, and increased thermal stability.

Injection-Molded Isotactic Polypropylene Colored with Green Transparent and Opaque Pigments

Vaclav Janostik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of transparent/opaque green masterbatches (MBs) and their concentration on the physico-mechanical and optical properties of PP produced by injection molding. The results showed that selected pigments had different nucleating abilities, affecting the dimensional stability and crystallinity of the product. The selection of appropriate pigments for PP should be considered, especially in areas where dimensional and color stability, as well as product safety, are highly important.

The Design and Preparation of Antibacterial Polymer Brushes with Phthalocyanine Pigments

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: To solve the problems of low polarity, poor dispersion in water, and easy agglomeration of phthalocyanine pigments in waterborne coating applications, the pigments were encapsulated with a copolymer and further grafted with an antibacterial polymer. The encapsulation improved the dispersion of the pigments in water and their compatibility with the resin. The grafting of the antibacterial polymer enhanced the antibacterial properties of the pigments.

Comparative Thermoelectric Properties of Polypropylene Composites Melt-Processed Using Pyrograf® III Carbon Nanofibers

Antonio J. Paleo et al.

Summary: The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of melt-processed polypropylene composites filled with 5 wt.% of industrial-grade carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were investigated at temperatures from 40 ffiC to 100 ffiC. The structural differences of two types of Pyrograf (R) III CNFs resulted in different effects on the composite materials. The PP/CNF24 composite exhibited higher electrical conductivity and a more negative Seebeck coefficient compared to the PP/CNF19 composite, indicating better thermoelectric properties.

Stability of hydrotalcite (Mg-Al layered double hydroxide) in presence of different anions

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: Experimental observation showed that MgO in cementitious materials precipitates as poorly crystalline hydrotalcite, but the lack of consistent thermodynamic data for hydrotalcite makes geochemical modelling challenging. Synthesizing hydrotalcites with different anions indicated varying levels of crystallinity. The stability of hydrotalcite structure with temperature was found to depend on the incorporated anion.

The effect of masterbatch pigments on the crystallisation, morphology, and shrinkage behaviour of Isotactic Polypropylene

Jawad Ullah et al.

Summary: Variations in mould shrinkage when using different types of pigments in semicrystalline polymers have been studied. The presence of pigments as nucleating agents affects the crystallisation and subsequently the shrinkage of the polymers. This can lead to interference fit issues between parts and problems in automated equipment. The study showed that masterbatch pigments have an influence on crystallisation and shrinkage behaviour, with red and purple pigments acting as strong nucleating agents and white pigments having less influence.

Effects of Modified Layered Double Hydroxides on the Thermal Degradation and Combustion Behaviors of Intumescent Flame Retardant Polyethylene Nanocomposites

Tiefeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The flame retardant effectiveness of Mg-Al LDH in polyethylene (PE) was improved by introducing 2-carboxy ethyl (phenyl) phosphinic acid (CEPPA) as a flame retardant modifier to prepare CEPPA-intercalated LDH (CLDH), which was then dispersed in PE through melt blending. The compact and fully developed char of the PE/IFR/CLDH composites were mainly attributed to the reactions between CLDH and the intumescent flame retardant (IFR), enhancing the flame retardancy of the composites.
