Nafion: New and Old Insights into Structure and Function

Barry W. Ninham et al.

Summary: The work investigates the dynamics of swelling and nanostructure of Nafion ion-exchange polymer membrane in different aqueous solutions using photoluminescent and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The study reveals that the sulfonic groups at the ends of the perfluorovinyl ether groups are the photoluminescent centers. Unexpected results are observed during the polymer swelling process due to changes in deuterium content of water. The hydration of sulfonic groups involves a competition between ortho- and para-magnetic forms of water, and deuterium competes with sulfonic groups, altering the sulfate bonds' geometry. The photoluminescent spectroscopy experiments show the unwinding of polymer fibers into the surrounding water, forming a brush-like structure perpendicular to the membrane surface.

Investigation of Aggregation and Disaggregation of Self-Assembling Nano-Sized Clusters Consisting of Individual Iron Oxide Nanoparticles upon Interaction with HEWL Protein Molecules

Ruslan M. Sarimov et al.

Summary: In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles coated with trisodium citrate were obtained and formed stable clusters. These clusters were composed of nanoparticles with sizes around 10-50 nm and 50-80 nm, which were made up of nanoparticles with a size of 3 nm. The stability of the clusters was controlled using dynamic light scattering and zeta potential, and the clusters were found to be destructible by hen egg-white lysozyme. The destruction of the nanoparticles and proteins led to the formation of aggregates within a short period of time. The size of the aggregates depended on the concentration of lysozyme and nanoparticles and could reach micron sizes. It was also observed that the concentration of nanoparticles at which protein aggregation occurred was toxic to cells, resulting in a decrease in cell survival and an increase in apoptotic cells.

Possibility to Alter Dynamics of Luminescence from Surface of Polymer Membrane with Ultrasonic Waves

Nikolai F. Bunkin et al.

Summary: The temporal dynamics of luminescence from the surface of Nafion polymer membranes was studied. It was found that ultrasonic waves affect the dynamics of luminescence, but only when Nafion is swollen in ordinary water.
