Crystallization of Sodium Borosilicate Glass with the Addition of Cr2O3

M. Yu. Konon et al.

Summary: The glass composition of 6Na(2)O 22B(2)O(3)center dot 70SiO(2)center dot 2Cr(2)O(3) was studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and differential thermal analysis. It was found that during heat treatment at 550 degrees C for 24-96 hours, a phase separation structure with interpenetrating phases was formed in the glass, along with the formation of eskolaite-Cr2O3 crystalline phase. With a maximum heat treatment duration of 96 hours, cristobalite was formed in the bulk of the glass, leading to a decrease in the glass transition temperature of the low-viscosity phase. Furthermore, the intensity of the eskolaite peaks decreased, suggesting crystallization of Cr2O3 and SiO2 due to the substance in the low-viscosity phase.

Chemical durability of the iron-containing sodium borosilicate glasses

Marina Konon et al.

Summary: The chemical durability of phase-separated glasses in the Na2O-B2O3-SiO2-Fe2O3 system was studied in boiling 3M aqueous HCl solution. The coordination of Fe3+ cations affected the leaching behavior, and a correlation with the Yun-Bray-Dell model was observed. Certain glass compositions were suitable for through-leaching and obtaining porous glasses.

Temperature dependent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(V) aroused by CaO during thermal treatment of solid waste containing Cr(VI)

Linqiang Mao et al.

Summary: This study found that at high temperatures, Cr(VI) can be reduced to Cr(V) instead of Cr(III) in the presence of CaO in heating solid waste containing Cr(VI). The reduction reaction of Cr(VI) into Cr(V) is strongly dependent on temperature (800-1000 degrees C) and the presence of CaO, with little impact from prolonging sintering time. Additionally, Cr(V) remains stable and does not re-oxidize into Cr(VI) at 800-1000 degrees C.

Inhibition of Cr6+ by the formation of in-situ Cr3+ containing solid-solution in Al2O3-CaO-Cr2O3-SiO2 system

Wenke Zhang et al.

Summary: The Al2O3-CaO-Cr2O3 system doped with SiO2 under heat treatment in an air atmosphere successfully inhibited the generation of toxic Cr6+ and transformed it into stable Cr3+, thus reducing harm. The investigation showed that the addition of SiO2 led to the disappearance of Cr6+ compound Ca4Al6Cr6+O16 and the formation of Cr3+ in a more stable phase, effectively preventing Cr6+ at elevated temperatures.
