Summary: This article reviews the state of PCM embedded radiant chilled ceiling (PCM-RCC) for space cooling, focusing on its potential for energy savings, peak load shifting, and thermal comfort. Various PCM-RCC simulation models are discussed, along with the effects of critical design and operating variables on system performance. It concludes that PCM-RCC can be more energy-efficient than conventional systems, but system design and operating variables must be carefully considered for optimal performance.

Heat transfer and fluid flow in a PCM-filled enclosure: Effect of inclination angle and mid-separation fin

Tarek Bouzennada et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study on the thermal behavior within a phase change material filling up a rectangular capsule with and without adding a fin, showing that the melting and storing energy rate increase with changing the capsule's inclination angle. Moreover, adding a fin can reduce the melting time and accelerate the rate of storing thermal energy, with the best choice being a horizontal fin with an inclination angle of 0 degrees.

Numerical investigation of heat transfer and melting process in a PCM capsule: Effects of inner tube position and Stefan number

Tarek Bouzennada et al.

Summary: The study found that heat transfer/melting rates of the PCM's capsule are improved when the inner-tube moves downward or with an increasing Stefan number. Results also showed that, with the same Stefan number, the melting rate and stored energy are significantly better for the central and bottom positions compared to the top position.

Multi-factor analysis on thermal comfort and energy saving potential for PCM-integrated buildings in summer

Y. Qu et al.

Summary: The multi-factor orthogonal simulation analysis explored the impact of four key parameters of PCM-integrated building envelopes on energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort in Chinese climate. The influence of these parameters on energy saving and indoor temperature fluctuation was discussed, with the optimal solution being the use of BioPCMTM23 (PCM2) with 7 cm thickness on both wall and roof. Integrating PCM into the envelope can effectively reduce indoor temperature fluctuations and achieve significant energy savings by selecting PCMs based on local climatic conditions.
