Mechanism of room-temperature superplasticity in ultrafine-grained Al-Zn alloys

Zizheng Song et al.

Summary: Superplastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is usually achieved by diffusion-assisted grain boundary sliding at high temperatures. Recent research has shown that room-temperature superplasticity can be achieved in ultrafine-grained Al-Zn based alloys, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. This study utilized in-situ tensile straining, electron microscopy characterization, and atomistic density functional theory simulation to reveal that the superplasticity at room temperature is achieved by grain boundary sliding and grain rotation, facilitated by the continuous diffusion of Zn. The diffusion of Zn atoms from grains to grain boundaries forms a Zn nanolayer, acting as a solid lubricant to lower the energy barrier of grain boundary sliding.

Enhanced intragranular dislocation capture ability in nano/ultrafine Al- Zn-Mg-Cu alloy by burnishing-assisted two-stage aging treatment- induced dynamic nucleation

Tianshu Zhao et al.

Summary: The effects of burnishing-assisted two-stage aging (BATSA) on the microstructural evolution and hardening behavior of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy were investigated. The BATSA treatment promoted a concentrated distribution of precipitate sizes and delayed phase coalescence. Moreover, dynamic nucleation induced by pre-aging and burnishing resulted in a better synergy of multiple strengthening mechanisms, significantly shortening the time to peak hardness in pre-aged burnished alloys.

Effect of Zn content on microstructure evolution in Al-Zn alloys processed by high-pressure torsion

Anwar Q. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Al-Zn alloys with different Zn contents were processed by HPT to produce UFG materials. Microstructural features of the UFG Al-Zn alloys were studied using various techniques. The mechanical behavior of the alloys showed a substantial difference with increasing Zn content, and the microstructure evolved differently in low and high Zn-containing alloys during the HPT process.

Effect of thermal strain on the microstructure evolution and post-aging mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy in simulating hot stamping process

Jue Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of thermal strain on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-MgCu alloys. The alloys undergo elevated temperature strain and artificial aging at 120 degrees C for various periods of time. The post-aging mechanical properties of the alloys are examined, and the microstructures are characterized using various techniques. The results show that thermal strain leads to an increase in ultimate tensile stress, a decrease in peak-aging time, and a slight refinement of deformed grains.

Overview: Using Severe Plastic Deformation in the Processing of Superplastic Materials

Terence G. Langdon

Summary: In tensile testing, polycrystalline materials usually fail at low total elongations, but under certain conditions, exceptionally high elongations of over 400% can be achieved. This superplastic condition is not only important scientifically, but also has significant industrial applications in superplastic forming operations. This overview traces the historical development of the superplastic effect and summarizes the main characteristics of the superplastic flow process. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing has effectively overcome the limitation of producing exceptionally small grain sizes within the submicrometer or nanometer range. The advantages of SPD processing are discussed and illustrated with examples. Additionally, the construction of deformation mechanism maps based on stress, grain size, and temperature combinations is shown as an effective way to display experimental data.

Effects of equal channel angular pressing and further cold upsetting process to the kinetics of precipitation during aging of 7050 aluminum alloy

Dong-sheng Jia et al.

Summary: The effects of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and further cold upsetting (CU) process on the precipitation kinetics during aging of solid solution treated 7050 Al alloy were investigated. It was found that the activation energy of the h' phase decreased after ECAP and ECAP-CU processes, resulting in a shorter peak aging time. The precipitation of the h phase was suppressed after ECAP, while it was accelerated after ECAP-CU process. The competition between dislocation annihilation and phase precipitation during aging treatment led to the softening and strengthening of the mechanical strength. The elongation increased while the strength slightly decreased.

Computational analysis of heterogeneous nucleation and precipitation in AA6005 Al-alloy during continuous cooling DSC experiments

Bernhard Miesenberger et al.

Summary: A physically-based model for the computational evaluation of DSC curves during continuous cooling of Al alloys has been developed. The model predicts the nucleation and growth of quench-induced precipitates at heterogeneous nucleation sites. The model considers the effects of interface curvature and diffuse interfaces for interface energy prediction. Experiment and simulation comparisons show that the impact of heterogeneous nucleation sites must be adequately considered for accurate predictions of precipitate evolution during continuous cooling.
