Preparation of pectin-chitosan hydrogels based on bioadhesive-design micelle to prompt bacterial infection wound healing

Kaichao Song et al.

Summary: This study designed a pectin-chitosan (PEC-CS) hydrogel loaded with bioadhesive-design micelle containing ciprofloxacin, aiming for antibacterial and wound healing applications. The hydrogel showed high water content, strong water absorption, and no cytotoxicity or hemolysis, providing a humid environment suitable for wounds. The dopamine modified carrier improved the solubility and retention time of ciprofloxacin in the wound, increasing the drug loading efficiency and exerting long-lasting antibacterial activity.

Development and Evaluation of Hydrogel Wound Dressings Loaded with Herbal Extracts

Alexandru Gavan et al.

Summary: The current study aimed to develop carbomer based hydrogel dressings, incorporating ethanolic extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis aerial parts, Achillea millefolium and Calendula officinalis flowers. The hydrogels showed notable pharmaceutical properties, texture changes, and antimicrobial activity when the ethanolic extracts were added. The hydrogel loaded with Rosmarinus officinalis aerial parts extract and the one incorporating the blend of extracts proved to have good antimicrobial activity. More in vivo studies are needed to further support the results and these hydrogels could serve as a basis for novel wound dressing materials.

Newly crosslinked chitosan- and chitosan-pectin-based hydrogels with high antioxidant and potential anticancer activity

Michal Dziadek et al.

Summary: This study modified chitosan-based hydrogels with 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde (THBA) for the first time and crosslinked them with pectin (PC), bioactive glass (BG), and rosmarinic acid (RA). THBA served as a crosslinker, improving the mechanical properties, swelling capacity, and degradation rate of the hydrogels. It also exhibited high antioxidant activity and antiproliferative effect on cancer cells without harming normal cells. The addition of PC enhanced the mechanical strength of the hydrogels, while the combination with BG improved their stability in PBS. All hydrogels modified with BG showed the ability to mineralize in simulated body fluid (SBF). RA not only enhanced antioxidant and anticancer activities but also promoted the mineralization process.

Kadriye Nur Kasapoglu et al.

Summary: In this study, pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) was used to maximize the extraction of hydrophilic polyphenols from black rosehip fruit. Optimal conditions were determined using response surface methodology and the extracted compounds were further encapsulated in biopolymer-coated liposomes for improved stability and bioavailability. The results showed that PHWE in combination with a biopolymer coating is an effective method for the production of stable and safe edible natural extracts containing (poly)phenolic compounds for use in food and dietary supplements.
