Perspectives on yellowing in the degradation of polymer materials: inter-relationship of structure, mechanisms and modes of stabilisation

Norman S. Allen et al.

Summary: Discolouration or yellowing phenomenon is a significant concern in the formulation, processing, and post-use of polymer materials. It can limit the acceptance of polymer applications in various products, such as clear films, bottles, white goods, and recycling processes. The yellowing can be attributed to additives, particularly phenolic/amine antioxidants, or inherent properties of polymers, such as polyesters, polycarbonates, epoxy-amines, and polystyrene. Overcoming this issue in industrial applications can be challenging. The article discusses the chemistry behind yellowing and presents effective modes of stabilization and inhibition, including unconventional examples and structural developments for optimizing additive performance. Chemical treatment processes using polyglycols and chemical reducing agents are also presented as potential solutions. The aim is to provide a clearer understanding of the chemistries involved in yellowing and offer insights for resolving potential issues in polymer manufacture and processing.

Quasi-static puncture resistance behaviors of architectural coated fabric

Junhao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the puncture resistance behaviors of architectural coated fabric, analyzing factors such as penetrator shape and yarn angle. Findings suggest that puncture resistance performance is dependent on penetrator shape and the number of yarns contacted, with additional influences from yarn angle and weight percentage of fiber. FE models were used for predicting the puncture resistance behavior accurately.

Effect of Fumed Silica Nanoparticles on Ultraviolet Aging Resistance of Bitumen

Goshtasp Cheraghian et al.

Summary: In this study, bitumen modified by fumed silica nanoparticles was characterized and the resistance of the modified bitumen to UV aging was found to improve with increasing nanoparticle content. The nanoparticles were well dispersed in the modified bitumen, and the improvement effect was most pronounced with 0.1 wt.-% fumed silica nanoparticles.
