Efficient synthesis of biodiesel from Hyoscyamus niger L. seed oil by base catalysis

Qi Chen et al.

Summary: To develop new raw materials for biodiesel, Henbane seed oil was synthesized into biodiesel for the first time using K2O/γ-Al2O3 as a catalyst. The optimal transesterification reaction conditions were determined using central composite design and response surface methodology. The predicted biodiesel yield was 90.25%, and the quality of the biodiesel met the European standard EN14214.

Dynamic oxygen migration and reaction over ceria-supported nickel oxides in chemical looping partial oxidation of methane

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic migration and reaction of oxygen species over ceria-supported NiO oxygen carrier for CLPOM. It is found that the active Ni-O-Ce species dominates the methane partial oxidation and the lattice oxygen from CeO2 would migrate through the bulk to complement the consumed Ni-O-Ce oxygen species. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the transport and reaction mechanism of oxygen species for chemical looping processes.

Impacts of Sn(II) doping on the Keggin heteropolyacid-catalyzed etherification of glycerol with tert-butyl alcohol

Marcio Jose da Silva et al.

Summary: Phosphomolybdic acid salts were synthesized and evaluated as catalysts for the etherification reactions of glycerol with tert-butyl alcohol, with Sn(II) cations exchanged for their protons. Among the tested Sn(II) heteropoly salts, Sn3PMo12O40 showed the highest activity and selectivity towards glyceryl ethers, attributed to its greater Lewis acidity strength. Economic analysis indicated the viability of the process with a return on investment (ROI) of 30.7% for an annual production capacity of 30,000 metric tons.

Biodiesel production with enhanced fuel properties via appropriation of non-edible oil mixture using conjoint ultrasound and microwave reactor: Process optimization and kinetic studies

Pravin Kodgire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the simultaneous application of microwave and ultrasound irradiation for transesterification of raw castor oil and waste cooking oil blends, aiming for process optimization, reaction kinetics, and energy analysis. The results show that the blended oil ratio is the most significant process variable. The optimized conditions lead to a high yield of biodiesel with improved physicochemical properties compared to castor oil biodiesel. The blended oil biodiesel can be used as a renewable fuel blended with petro-diesel.

Morphology effect of ceria support with hierarchical structure on the catalytic performance for nickel-based catalysts in dry reforming of methane

Shuqin Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, different morphologies of ceria were prepared through hydrothermal method, and the catalytic performance of dumbbell-shaped ceria as a support for Ni-based catalyst in methane dry reforming (DRM) was compared. The results showed that the dumbbell-shaped ceria exhibited the best catalytic performance, which could be attributed to its abundant oxygen vacancies and strong metal-support interaction.

Selective synthesis of triacetyl glyceride biofuel additive via acetylation of glycerol over NiO-supported TiO2 catalyst enhanced by non-microwave instant heating

Jimmy Nelson Appaturi et al.

Summary: NiO-supported TiO2 catalysts were prepared for the production of triacetyl glyceride biofuel additives via acetylation of glycerol. Among the catalysts, 30NiO/TiO2 showed the strongest acidity and highest accessible surface area, exhibiting high activity and selectivity in the acetylation reaction. The catalyst maintained good catalytic performance even after eight successive runs, providing a green pathway for synthesizing TAG vehicle fuel additives with high selectivity.

Valorization of glycerol into glycerol carbonate using the stable heterogeneous catalyst of Li/MCM-41

Shivali Arora et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the catalytic activity of heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification of glycerol into glycerol carbonate. The study found that lithium impregnated on MCM-41 framework showed better catalytic activity, leading to an increase in the average pore diameter. The optimal conditions for glycerol carbonate yield were determined as 5% Li impregnation, calcination at 450°C, reaction temperature of 90°C for 3 hours, achieving a 93.14% yield.

Esra Yilmaz Mertsoy et al.

Summary: Chromium based metal organic framework (MIL-101)/activated carbon composite materials were synthesized and investigated for their catalytic effect in glycerol acetylation. The composition of chromium ion to activated carbon greatly influenced the catalytic activity and selectivity of the materials. Various characterization techniques were used to explore the correlation between structure and catalytic performance.

Synthesis of fuel bioadditive by esterification of glycerol with acetic acid over hydrophobic polymer-based solid acid

Ronglin Mou et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of polydivinylbenzene-based solid acids (PDS) with different structural performances were prepared and utilized as catalysts for the acetylation of glycerol with acetic acid to produce DAG and TAG. PDS-THF prepared in tetrahydrofuran solvent exhibited the highest catalytic activity, converting glycerol almost completely into glyceryl acetates with a combined selectivity of 88.6% under optimal conditions. The superior catalytic performance of PDS-THF was attributed to the synergism of abundant acidic sites, suitable acidic site density, and super hydrophobicity.
