Field study of the dielectric constant of concrete: A parameter less sensitive to environmental variations than electrical resistivity

Rui He et al.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of curing concrete slabs using air and compound methods was evaluated using non-destructive testing methods. The developments of dielectric constant value, compressive strength, hydration degree, and microstructure of the cured slabs were measured. The results showed that the dielectric constant value of compound cured concrete slabs was consistently higher than that of air cured slabs. The second reflected pulse peak amplitude of ground penetrating radar (GPR) waveform was a reliable indicator of the dielectric constant value. The dielectric constant value determined by the two-way travel time method exhibited strong correlations with compressive strength, CH content, and porosity.

Fractal characteristics and damage evaluation of corroded beams under four-point bending tests based on acoustic emission techniques

Yonglai Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the fractal characteristics of the acoustic emission (AE) signal parameter sequence and the damage evolution information of corroded RC beams under four-point bending. By coupling the four-point bending test and the AE monitoring, strength deterioration behavior and AE data are obtained. The results show that both the corroded and uncorroded beams exhibit prominent fractal characteristics in the AE ringing counts. The fractal dimension values of the corroded RC beams fluctuate to a peak and then sharply drop before failure. The damage index corresponding to the peak point decreases with increasing corrosion degree. The fractal dimension peak point can be utilized as an early warning point for failure in corroded RC beams. The fractal dimension analysis of AE can effectively reflect the pattern of crack development, which is valuable in evaluating the rupture process of corroded RC beams.

Macro-Microscopic Deterioration Behavior of Gypsum Rock after Wetting and Its Constitutive Model Based on Acoustic Emission

Xiaoding Xu et al.

Summary: Gypsum rock undergoes mechanical deterioration when exposed to a water environment. This study explores the effects of water content and immersion time on the mechanical behavior of gypsum rock. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that the internal microstructure of gypsum rock becomes looser and more complex with longer immersion times. The fractal dimensions of these images quantify the degree of damage. Triaxial compression tests establish the relationship between water content and mechanical response, and acoustic emission analysis shows a positive correlation between immersion time and AE frequency, and a negative correlation with AE cumulative count. A damage constitutive model is developed based on these findings.

Failure mechanisms of corroded/non-corroded RC cylinder under axial compressive loading evaluated by AE technique

Mouhamadou Mountakhah Seye et al.

Summary: This study used the acoustic emission technique to investigate the mechanical behaviors and failure processes of corroded and non-corroded reinforced concrete cylinders under compressive loading. The results showed that the corrosion of rebars decreased the load-carrying capacity of the RC cylinders and caused early damages during the compression test.

Micro-Mesoscopic Creep Damage Evolution and Failure Mechanism of Sandy Mudstone

Hongwen Jing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the micro-mesoscopic creep damage evolution and failure mechanism of a typical sandy mudstone from the deep-buried roadway of the Kouzidong coal mine. It was found that creep loading leads to more severe, homogeneous, and dispersed microdamage in sandy mudstone, resulting in a looser failure mode. Both experimental and numerical results validate the microdamage evolution mechanism under creep loading in sandy mudstone.

Acoustic Emission Monitoring of RC Beams Corroded to Different Levels Under Flexural Loading

Sunil Garhwal et al.

Summary: The research evaluates the behavior of large-sized reinforced concrete beams corroded to different levels under flexural loading using local acoustic emission technique. As corrosion level increases, the ultimate load-carrying capacity and midspan deflections decrease significantly, indicating increased brittleness and decreased ductility in the corroded beams. AE monitoring shows various stages of failure progression in corroded RC beams under flexural loading, with a significant drop in cumulative AE hits as corrosion level increases.
