A novel reutilization of ash from biomass gasification process: Feasibility and products improvement analysis

Qianqian Guo et al.

Summary: Due to the rapid growth of the biomass gasification industry, the proper management and disposal of ash has become a major environmental concern. This study proposes a novel strategy that utilizes ash as a catalyst in the gasification process to improve the quality of gas products. The reutilization of ash from corn straw air gasification was conducted to analyze its feasibility and it was found that the loading rate of ash significantly influenced the gasification performance. The results showed that the reutilization of ash was feasible and could achieve the dual objectives of improving gas product quality and reducing SO2 emissions.

A review on the utilization of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash as a mineral resource for construction materials

Boyu Chen et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of waste incineration technology has led to an increase in the production of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. There is growing interest in using MSWI bottom ash as a mineral resource for construction materials. However, the quality of MSWI bottom ash needs improvement before it can be used. This review summarizes the composition of MSWI bottom ash, discusses its reactivity as a cementitious material, and examines the challenges and possible solutions for using it as a mineral resource for construction materials.

Chemical study of bottom ash sintering in combustion of pelletized residual agricultural biomass

Javier Royo et al.

Summary: Residual agricultural biomass is a high-potential energy source, but its use is limited by the characteristics of its ash. This study focused on bottom ash sintering during combustion, analyzing samples collected from combustion tests with different agropellets. The results suggest that alkali metal silicates and phosphates are key factors in influencing sintering behavior, with silicon and phosphorus content playing a crucial role.

Utilization of acid-washed sewage sludge ash as sand or cement replacement in concrete

Lisbeth M. Ottosen et al.

Summary: The research explores the use of acid-washed sewage sludge ash (AW-SSA) in concrete, finding that directly replacing the sand fraction by 10% is not feasible due to high water demand. However, grinding the AW-SSA and using it as cement replacement yields positive results in terms of late strength development. This process suggests an interesting potential for transforming SSA into two products: phosphorous extraction and material for partially replacing cement in concrete.

Thermal treatment of sewage sludge: A comparative review of the conversion principle, recovery methods and bioavailability-predicting of phosphorus

Summary: This paper reviews methods for recovering different forms of phosphorus from solid products obtained from different sludge thermal treatment methods, as well as the bioavailability of the recovered phosphorus products. Incineration of sewage sludge is currently the most established and effective method for recovering phosphorus, while one wet chemical method has been commercialized and is expected to be further developed for industrial applications in the future. Pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization still have research gaps, but both have the potential to recover phosphorus and should be further explored based on their principles and laboratory performance.

An overview of utilizing CO2 for accelerated carbonation treatment in the concrete industry

Liang Li et al.

Summary: Accelerated carbonation treatment is an effective approach for reducing carbon emissions in the concrete industry, but it faces industrial challenges and research gaps. Key parameters for pre-carbonation treatment include chemical composition, particle size, temperature, pressure, and CO2 concentration. The increased CO2 uptake capacity may not necessarily improve the mechanical properties of cement-based composites. The influence of accelerated carbonation curing on the compressive strength of cement-based composites has both positive and negative effects.

This study examines various waste resources and contaminated materials as sources of REE in urban settings. Potential reuse options for biomass combustion ash as affected by the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) content

Jihua Zhai et al.

Summary: Burning biomass as fuel produces ash with persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The concentrations of three classes of POPs in biomass ash samples are compared, and it is found that fly ash has higher concentrations compared to bottom/total ash. The ash POPs content is influenced by the type of biomass and ash fraction. The data availability for PCBs is limited, but a correlation with PCCD/Fs allows estimation of the PCB+ PCCD/F content. The ash from virgin biomass is suitable for use as fertilizer, while waste-sourced ash is better suited for controlled use in construction. Higher POPs contents in fly ash restrict its use and occasionally disposal of PCDD/F contents may be necessary.
