Experimental Investigation of the Performance of Corn Straw Fiber Cement-Stabilized Macadam

Liming Wang et al.

Summary: The application of plant fibers in road materials has gained attention due to its environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. Among plant fibers, corn straw stands out as a more abundant and widely distributed resource. This study examined the impact of corn straw fiber on cement-stabilized macadam, with fiber length and content as variables. The results showed that a small amount of fiber had minimal effect on compression density, but significantly improved compressive and splitting strengths, shrinkage coefficient, crack resistance, and dry-wet cycle durability of the cement-stabilized macadam.

Influence of Surface Chemistry of Fiber and Lignocellulosic Materials on Adhesion Properties with Polybutylene Succinate at Nanoscale

Carlos Marcuello et al.

Summary: The production of bio-based composites with enhanced characteristics is an important strategy to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. The mechanical properties of these materials depend on the components and the interface between the matrix and the fibers. This study used atomic force microscopy and functionalized tips to investigate the intermolecular interactions between poly(butylene succinate) and different plant fibers, providing valuable insights for designing composite materials.

Improving Ramie Fibers Softness Using Ionic Liquid Treatment

Wanwan Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment of degummed ramie fibers using different concentrations of ionic liquid solutions. The results showed that the treatment effectively improved the mechanical properties and softness of the fibers, while also enhancing their water absorption and breaking elongation. Consequently, ramie fibers treated with ionic liquid may have better potential for use in textile production.

Modification of Ramie Fiber via Impregnation with Low Viscosity Bio-Polyurethane Resins Derived from Lignin

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of ramie fiber through impregnation with low-viscosity lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) resins. The LPU resins were synthesized by dissolving lignin in 20% NaOH and adding polymeric 4,4-methane diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) with a mole ratio of 0.3 NCO/OH. Impregnation of ramie fiber with LPU resins led to the formation of urethane bonds, increasing thermal stability by an average of 6% and mechanical properties by an average of 100% compared to untreated fiber. The best results were obtained with LPU-ethyl acetate, with a residual weight of 22% and tensile strength of 648.7 MPa after 30 minutes of impregnation.

Impact of drying process on kraft lignin: lignin-water interaction mechanism study by 2D NIR correlation spectroscopy

Oihana Gordobil et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of drying temperature on the properties of hardwood kraft lignin, revealing the impact of drying on the hygroscopicity of the lignin polymer and the molecular interactions between water and kraft lignin. Analytical techniques such as Py-GC-MS, dynamic NIR spectra, and PCA were utilized to analyze the chemical differences between lignin dried at different temperatures. The study also provided insights into the water sorption mechanism of lignin polymer, highlighting the sequential order in which water vapor molecules interact with active sorption sites in kraft lignin.
