A gradient oxy-thiophosphate-coated Ni-rich layered oxide cathode for stable all-solid-state Li-ion batteries

Jianwen Liang et al.

Summary: Layered oxide cathode active materials suffer from interfacial structural instability when coupled with sulfide solid-state electrolytes. Here, the authors propose a gradient coating with a lithium oxythiophosphate layer that can stabilize the cathode|solid-state electrolyte interface. This coating effectively hinders structural degradation and allows for a specific discharge capacity of 128mAh/g after almost 250 cycles.

Summary: Nickel-rich layered oxides are the most promising cathode candidates for lithium-ion cells due to their high theoretical specific capacity. However, the higher nickel content leads to unwanted phase transitions and parasitic side reactions, causing capacity fading. Therefore, understanding the chemistry and structural behavior is essential for developing Ni-rich Lithium Nickel Cobalt Manganese oxide (NCM) cathode-based high-energy batteries. This review focuses on the challenges associated with Ni-rich NCM materials, surface modification strategies, and recent developments in coating techniques and their impact on degradation mechanisms.

Origin of structural degradation in Li-rich layered oxide cathode

Tongchao Liu et al.

Summary: Utilizing Li- and Mn-rich (LMR) cathode materials can increase battery energy density. However, voltage decay issues impede commercialization. In this study, it is revealed that nanostrain and lattice displacement accumulate continuously during operation, leading to structure degradation and oxygen loss, which cause rapid voltage decay. The heterogeneous nature of LMR cathodes results in pernicious phase displacement/strain. Mesostructural design is proposed as a strategy to mitigate lattice displacement and achieve stable voltage and capacity profiles.
