Effect of WC nanoparticles on the thermal stability and mechanical performance of dispersion-reinforced Cu composites

Lu Han et al.

Summary: WC dispersion-reinforced Cu composites with high thermal stability were successfully fabricated using intermittent electrodeposition and spark plasma sintering. The WC nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the Cu matrix, impeding grain boundary migration and increasing the grain-growth activation energy. The composite exhibited significantly increased yield strength at high temperatures, making it suitable for use as a heat sink.

Exploring the role of fuel on the microstructure of VOx/MgO powders prepared using solution combustion synthesis

Pinkie Ntola et al.

Summary: This study presents the structural characterization of VOx/MgO powders prepared by a stoichiometric solution combustion synthesis using five different fuels. The synthesized powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Aberration Corrected Transmission Electron Microscopy. The results showed that the selection of fuel influenced the microstructure, vanadate phase formation, and dispersion of each powder. By correlating experimental microstructural parameters with calculated thermodynamic parameters, the study demonstrates the crucial role of fuel in controlling reaction kinetics.

Summary: In this paper, the plastic deformation and mechanical properties of TiB2/Cu composites were evaluated through the establishment of different configurations of composite material models. The results showed that the hybrid reinforced (TiB2p+TiBw)/Cu network composites exhibited better comprehensive mechanical properties, but the addition of whiskers reduced the elongation of the composites.

The effect of ball to powder ratio on the processing of a novel Mo-Cu-Al2O3 composite

Daniel Petho et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of different ball to powder ratios on particle size, shape, and composition in a 45Mo-45Cu-10Al(2)O(3) nano-composite. Lower ball to powder ratios resulted in nano-sized crystallites with homogeneous phase distribution, while higher ratios led to smaller crystallite sizes but possible contamination. After hot pressing, lower ratios produced a homogeneous microstructure, while higher ratios showed higher ceramic content and increased hardness but lower relative density.

Summary: Cu-Al2O3 nanocomposites were prepared by mixing Ag-coated Al2O3 nanoparticles with pure Cu powder through electro-less deposition, with excellent dispersion of Al2O3 nanoparticles achieved at high weight percentage. The addition of Ag-coated Al2O3 nanoparticles improved the density, hardness, and wear resistance of the composites, with the compressive strength reaching 33% improvement compared to pure Cu when the Al2O3 content was increased to 10 wt.%.
