Properties of Cement Mortars Containing Phosphorous Slag

Ramin Naseroleslami et al.

Summary: Supplementary cementitious material (SCM) phosphorous slag (PS) can improve the durability and mechanical properties of cement-based materials by restricting moisture and aggressive ion transfer. The effects of PS on fresh and hardened cement mortars were investigated, as well as the influence of surface area. Results showed that PS had a significant impact on the initial workability and long-term performance of mortars. Comparisons with silica fume (SF) revealed that PS was less active but contributed to strength gain after longer moist curing periods.

Harmless treatment of electrolytic manganese residue: Ammonia nitrogen recovery, preparation of struvite and nonsintered bricks

Xinyue Liu et al.

Summary: The ammonia nitrogen in electrolytic manganese residue can be effectively removed by slaked lime, carbide slag, and red mud. The removal efficiency is affected by the liq-uid-solid ratio, stirring time, and additives dosage. When pre-treated with 7.4% fresh CS for 15 min, the ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency of EMR can reach 98.5% at a liquid-solid ratio of 1.50. With the synergistic effect of CS and RM, the ammonia nitrogen in EMR can be quickly removed within 15 min, achieving a removal efficiency of 98.2%. This study also demonstrated the feasibility of using CS and RM to replace slaked lime for ammonia nitrogen removal and provided a solution for preparing struvite and nonsintered bricks using the remaining EMR.

Structural Characterization of Phosphorous Slag Regarding Occurrence State of Phosphorus in Dicalcium Silicate

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively characterizes phosphorous slag and investigates its structural and cementitious characteristics. The results show that phosphorous slag has good thermal stability, comprising mainly of CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3. However, its cementitious activity is lower than blast furnace slag. P is uniformly distributed in the slag and mainly exists in orthophosphates.

Diatomaceous Earth-Lightweight Pozzolanic Admixtures for Repair Mortars-Complex Chemical and Physical Assessment

Milena Pavlikova et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the assessment of three types of diatomaceous earth and their potential application as active admixtures in the concrete industry and production of repair mortars for historical masonry. The experimental campaign included various tests to evaluate the chemical, mineralogical, microstructural, and physical properties of the raw materials, as well as the pozzolanic activity, rheology, and mechanical parameters of blended pastes. The results showed that diatomaceous earth had different behavior when mixed with water and Portland cement, and it exhibited high strength activity and pozzolanic reaction when blended with cement.

Rapid Evaluation of the Pozzolanic Activity of Bayer Red Mud by a Polymerization Degree Method: Correlations with Alkali Dissolution of (Si plus Al) and Strength

Yaguang Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry to determine the polymerization degree of Bayer red mud for assessing its pozzolanic activity. The relationships between different evaluation methods and relevant calculation formulas were analyzed to confirm the correlation between polymerization degree and pozzolanic activity. The results demonstrated that the polymerization degree had a strong negative correlation with the pozzolanic activity index and dissolution concentration of (Si+Al), suggesting the method's effectiveness for rapid and simple evaluation of pozzolanic activity in Bayer red mud.

Resistance of red clay brick waste/phosphorus slag-based geopolymer mortar to acid solutions of mild concentration

Mostafa Vafaei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that geopolymer cement mortar showed excellent acid resistance when exposed to acidic solutions, surpassing reference mortars in durability properties. Exposure to sulfuric acid caused more severe deterioration in all specimens due to the formation of gypsum resulting in expansion and cracking of the paste matrix.

Effect of granulated phosphorus slag on physical, mechanical and microstructural characteristics of Class F fly ash based geopolymer

Yanhai Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of granulated phosphorus slag (GPS) in Class F fly ash (FFA) based geopolymer can reduce setting time, increase compressive strength, and create a denser and more homogeneous microstructure. Utilizing scanning electron microscopy and other tools, it was observed that GPS generated calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel, coexisting with sodium aluminate silicate hydrate (N-A-S-H) gel, resulting in improved mechanical properties of the derived geopolymer.
