Bidirectional Associations of Childhood Stuttering With Behavior and Temperament

Psychological characteristics of early stuttering

Summary: The study found that pre-schoolers who stutter do not exhibit unusual behavioral and emotional functioning, or temperaments, compared to normal children. However, a portion of parents seeking treatment were experiencing moderate to high life stressors, and some parents failed the screener for Anankastic Personality Disorder. These results suggest that the association between mental health and stuttering is likely a consequence of the disorder rather than a cause.
