Assessing changes in soil quality between protected and degraded forests using digital soil mapping for semiarid oak forests, Iran

Khadijeh Taghipour et al.

Summary: Soil quality, one of the most important characteristics of soil, is crucial for sustainable soil management and evaluating soil degradation. This study aims to assess the impacts of deforestation on soil quality in Iran using a digital soil mapping approach. The results show that the soil quality in the protected forested area is significantly higher than the degraded/deforested area. Machine learning techniques, particularly the Random Forest model, outperform geostatistical approaches in mapping soil quality. This study provides a framework for assessing the impacts of deforestation on soil patterns, which can inform land use planning and forest resource management strategies.

Assessing soil quality of pasture and agriculture land uses in Shandiz county, northwestern Iran

Fariba Samaei et al.

Summary: This study compared soil quality indicators in agricultural and pasture land uses and found that pasture land use had higher soil quality indices. The use of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) was effective for assessing soil quality, showing similar results to the Total Data Set (TDS). Agricultural practices were found to decrease soil quality.

Application of soil quality index to determine the effects of different vegetation types on soil quality in the Yellow River Delta wetland

Yinghu Zhang et al.

Summary: Assessment of soil quality in different vegetation types of wetland ecosystems is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of wetland ecosystems. This study evaluated the soil quality in three different vegetation types in the Yellow River Delta wetland in China using a range of soil quality indicators. The results showed significant variations in soil quality among the different sites and soil depths, with soil organic carbon and total soil porosity identified as key indicators of soil quality.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of different methods in calculating the soil quality index (SQI) and found that the SQI generated by network analysis (NTA) was more useful than that generated by principal component analysis (PCA), as it was able to better differentiate the soil uses.

Changes of soil quality induced by different vegetation restoration in the collapsing gully erosion areas of southern China

Hui Wen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of collapsing gully management restoration on soil quality and function, finding that different vegetation restoration types significantly impacted soil properties. Natural restoration mixed forest (NF) showed the highest soil quality index (SQI) value, followed by replanted arboreal forest (RA) and replanted scrubland (RS), all of which were significantly higher than the SQI value of the erosion area (EA) in the collapsing gully. Vegetation type explained the most substantial proportion of total variability (46.41%), and restoration time showed a positive correlation with SQI.

Quantitative assessment of soil quality indices for urban croplands in a calcareous semi-arid ecosystem

N. Mamehpour et al.

Summary: Urbanization has both negative and positive impacts on soil quality, with an increase in soil salinity, heavy metals, and erodibility, while also increasing organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and cation exchange capacity. The study found that urban soils exhibited a decrease in SQI scenarios compared to control soils, indicating worsening soil quality in urban areas. The highest values of soil quality indicators were observed in Fluvisols, suggesting a combined influence of soil type and agricultural management practices.

Analyzing ecological environment change and associated driving factors in China based on NDVI time series data

Luguang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in China's ecological environment over the past 20 years using long-term NDVI data, revealing that approximately one-third of the country has seen improvements while 10% has experienced deterioration. Provinces such as Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Guizhou, and Guangxi have shown the most significant improvements. Forestry projects and oasis agriculture development have effectively promoted the enhancement of the ecological environment in certain areas.

An integrated index based on climatic constraints and soil quality to simulate vegetation productivity patterns

Shoubao Geng et al.

Summary: Vegetation productivity simulation at large scales is crucial for understanding ecosystem carbon sequestration, with environmental factors like climate and soil quality playing a significant role. Integrating vapor pressure deficit, minimum temperature, and soil quality into a water-temperature-soil index (WTSI) can effectively model vegetation productivity patterns, leading to more accurate results compared to models focusing solely on climate constraints. The spatial patterns of WTSI showed distinct regions with varying environmental constraints, emphasizing the importance of considering water, temperature, and soil factors in ecosystem conservation and management.

An assessment of pasture soils quality based on multi-indicator weighting approaches in semi-arid ecosystem

Siyami Karaca et al.

Summary: The development of soil quality index in the vicinity of the Van Lake pasture lands located in the Northern East Part of Turkey is crucial for assessing the sustainability of the semi-arid terrestrial ecosystem. By sampling 150 soils and quantifying various indicators, a soil quality index integrated with remote sensing and geographical information system was developed. The study found a parallel trend between the calculated SQIs using different data set approaches in the pasture area, with a significant statistical relationship between TDSSQI/MDSSQI and REOSAVI in May and June.

Farzaneh Derakhshan-Babaei et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between soil quality, erosion, geomorphology, and land-use in the Kan catchment of central Iran. The study found that erosion rates were high due to topographic diversity, steep slopes, and lack of vegetation, with soil quality being influenced by factors such as organic matter and sand content.

Improvements in soil quality with vegetation succession in subtropical China karst

Yaohua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different vegetation succession on soil quality in karst areas of southwest China. It found that secondary forest had the highest soil quality, followed by shrub and grass, with cropland having the lowest. Principal component analysis identified key indicators for soil quality, and the Minimum Data Set method effectively represented the Total Data Set method in quantifying the effects of vegetation succession on soil quality.
