A comprehensive approach combining positive matrix factorization modeling, meteorology, and machine learning for source apportionment of surface ozone precursors: Underlying factors contributing to ozone formation in Houston, Texas

Delaney Nelson et al.

Summary: This study used a comprehensive PMF-SHAP approach to evaluate the impact of various emissions sources and meteorological factors on ozone formation in Houston from 2017 to 2021. The findings showed that ozone concentrations in Houston are among the highest in the United States, posing significant risks to human health. Shortwave radiation and humidity were identified as the most important variables for both sites, and different emissions sources and meteorological factors had varying impacts on ozone production at different sites.

Source characterization of volatile organic compounds at Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Da Pan et al.

Summary: Carlsbad Caverns National Park experiences elevated ground-level ozone, mainly due to the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from oil and gas activities in the adjacent Permian Basin. Measurements and analysis of VOCs in the park identified seven different sources, including O&G development and production activities, secondary photochemically generated compounds, vehicle emissions, and regional background VOCs. The largest contributor to VOC reactivity with hydroxyl radicals was O&G development and production activities, accounting for 62%. Reductions in VOC emissions from oil and gas activities are crucial for mitigating elevated ozone levels in the region.

Quantifying NOx Emissions from US Oil and Gas Production Regions Using TROPOMI NO2

Barbara Dix et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to quantify NOx emissions from oil and gas production activities using satellite observations, which can be used to evaluate emission inventories and provide input for chemistry transport models. The results show that the calculated NOx emissions are consistent with the trends in industrial activity in six oil and gas production regions in the United States.

Rethinking of the adverse effects of NOx-control on the reduction of methane and tropospheric ozone - Challenges toward a denitrified society

Hajime Akimoto et al.

Summary: Nitrogen oxides are important precursors of tropospheric ozone, and reducing their emissions can improve climate change and air pollution. However, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions can also affect the atmospheric lifetime of methane and urban ozone formation. Therefore, simultaneous reduction of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds is recommended for mitigating climate change and human health impacts.

PM2.5 in Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Composition, sources, and visibility impacts

Lillian E. Naimie et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 2019 aimed to examine the impact of regional sources on air quality, including urban emissions, oil and gas development, wildfires, and soil dust. The findings revealed that sulfate, soil dust, and black carbon were the major contributors to visibility impairment, with transport from the southeast direction, where oil and gas development is dense, having the worst impact.

Impacts of Emissions of C2-C5 Alkanes From the US Oil and Gas Sector on Ozone and Other Secondary Species

Z. A. Tzompa-Sosa et al.

Summary: In many U.S. oil and gas-producing regions, emissions of C2-C5 alkanes dominate local anthropogenic sources, impacting secondary species production. Using the GEOS-Chem model, it was found that areas in the central United States with oil and gas production have the highest surface ozone enhancements in the summer. The Colorado Front Range stands out as the most impacted area with significant increases in ozone and VOC reactivity from oil and gas sources.

Summary: This study collected multiyear observations of NMVOCs at the Boulder Reservoir in the Colorado Northern Front Range Metropolitan Area, and identified different sources contributing to these compounds. The results showed that O&NG activities are the predominant source of NMVOCs in winter and summer. The study also found that the NFRMA is more strongly influenced by O&NG sources compared to many other U.S. urban regions.

Quantifying Methane and Ozone Precursor Emissions from Oil and Gas Production Regions across the Contiguous US

Colby B. Francoeur et al.

Summary: This study provides an updated fuel-based oil and gas inventory, estimating NOx emissions from production in the contiguous US, and compares it with aircraft-derived emissions. The research shows good agreement between the bottom-up inventory and top-down aircraft-derived NOx emissions. It also suggests that NMVOC/NOx emissions from oil and gas basins may be three times higher than current estimates, potentially affecting how air quality models represent ozone formation downwind of oil and gas fields.

Revisiting Acetonitrile as Tracer of Biomass Burning in Anthropogenic-Influenced Environments

Yibo Huangfu et al.

Summary: Acetonitrile (CH3CN) is widely used as a tracer for biomass burning, but its absolute mixing ratio may lead to misidentification in anthropogenic-influenced environments. Despite high levels of CH3CN observed with minor biomass burning impact, its correlation with CO suggests a shared source, likely vehicular emissions. Enhancement ratios (EnRs) of CH3CN to CO were found to be a more specific indicator for biomass burning compared to urban measurements.

Modification of a conventional photolytic converter for improving aircraft measurements of NO2 via chemiluminescence

Clara M. Nussbaumer et al.

Summary: NO2 plays a central role in atmospheric photochemical processes. This study measured NO2 concentrations using photolysis-chemiluminescence and identified MPN as a species causing thermal interference. The research also discovered a memory effect in traditional photolytic converters and found that a new quartz glass converter can improve the reliability of NO2 measurements.

Identifying and quantifying source contributions of air quality contaminants during unconventional shale gas extraction

Nur H. Orak et al.

Summary: This study investigates emissions at an active Marcellus Shale well pad in the USA, identifying three main sources impacting air quality: natural gas, regional transport/photochemistry, and engine emissions. The study found that horizontal drilling phase significantly contributes to the natural gas factor, while engine emission factor increases over different well pad drilling periods. Regional transport/photochemistry factor is more pronounced during horizontal drilling and drillout stages.
