A feasibility study of the therapeutic application of a mixture of 67/64Cu radioisotopes produced by cyclotrons with proton irradiation

Laura De Nardo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of a CuCl2 solution with a mixture of Cu-67/64 radioisotopes for therapeutic purposes, providing an alternative solution for the cyclotron production problem. Activities of copper radioisotopes were calculated with different production routes and their contribution to absorbed dose and biological damage were evaluated. Results showed that Cu-67/64 mixture may require supplemental activity compared to pure Cu-67 for tumor treatment, leading to higher absorbed doses in healthy organs.

Search for rare 3-α decays in the region of the Hoyle state of 12C

G. Cardella et al.

Summary: In this study, a refined analysis of data collected with the CHIMERA detector was conducted to search for rare 3-alpha decay modes near the Hoyle state of 12C. The investigation included the direct and sequential decay modes of the Hoyle state, as well as the recently suggested Efimov state. Comparison with simulations allowed the determination of the achievable precision under different experimental conditions. The results showed good sensitivities to different decay scenarios in the CHIMERA spherical region, despite its limited angular resolution. The study on the decay of the Efimov state in 12C utilized new selection strategies based on simulations. Although the obtained results are inconclusive, the presence of sequential decay of this state has been excluded, while the data could be compatible with its direct decay.

Nuclear data for light charged particle induced production of emerging medical radionuclides

Gaia Pupillo et al.

Summary: It is essential to understand the expected yield and possible radionuclidic impurities in the production process of nuclear medicine. The optimal production routes for most emerging radioisotopes still need to be strengthened or defined. This work presents a review on the production of emerging radionuclides for medical applications, highlighting the importance of considering all types of projectiles. The quality of the final product strongly depends on the chosen target/projectile/energy parameters set, and the use of deuteron production routes or alpha-particle beams may overcome limitations and yield better results.

Summary: In this study, an ab initio deformed single-reference in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) approach for open-shell nuclei is developed. The angular momentum projection is used to restore the broken rotational symmetry, but full angular momentum projection at the IMSRG level remains challenging. The authors estimate the angular momentum projection effect by projecting the HF state as a leading-order approximation and test it on the deformed Be-8, Be-10 isotopes. Furthermore, they systematically investigate the ground-state energies and charge radii of even-even nuclei from light beryllium to medium-mass magnesium isotopes.

First experimental determination of the radiative-decay probability of the 31- state in 12C for estimating the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments

M. Tsumura et al.

Summary: By measuring the H-1(C-12, Cp-12) reaction, this study determined the radiative-decay probability of the 3(1)(-) state in C-12 for the first time, and derived the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments. The findings suggest that the 3(1)(-) state significantly enhances the triple alpha reaction rate.

Tracing the dynamical interplay of low-energy reaction processes of exotic nuclei using a two-center molecular continuum

Laura Moschini et al.

Summary: Competition among reaction processes of a weakly-bound projectile at intermediate times of a slow collision has been revealed using a two-center molecular continuum within a semiclassical, time-dependent coupled-channel reaction model. The dynamical probabilities of elastic scattering, transfer, and breakup agree with results from direct integration of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, showing the usefulness of a two-center molecular continuum for gaining insights into the reaction dynamics of exotic nuclei.

Cyclotron production and radiochemical purification of terbium-155 for SPECT imaging

C. Favaretto et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated two possible production routes for high activities of terbium-155 using a cyclotron, indicating that the radionuclide is more accessible than the exclusive mass-separated method previously demonstrated. The developed radiochemical purification of terbium-155 from the target material yielded [Tb-155]TbCl3 in high chemical purity. As a result, initial cell uptake investigations, as well as SPECT/CT in vivo studies with [Tb-155]Tb-DOTATOC, were successfully performed, indicating that the chemical separation produced a product with suitable quality for preclinical studies.

Temperature effects on neutron-capture cross sections and rates through electric dipole transitions in hot nuclei

A. Berceanu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temperature evolution of electric dipole transition strengths of tin isotopes using self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and finite-temperature RPA models based on a relativistic density functional. It was found that for lighter tin isotopes, temperature mainly affects at high temperatures, while for neutron-rich tin isotopes, the low-lying strength distributions become fragmented at lower temperatures. Additionally, the temperature effects on (n, gamma) cross sections were studied, showing significant enhancements for both light and neutron-rich tin isotopes.

New results on proton-induced reactions on vanadium for 47Sc production and the impact of level densities on theoretical cross sections

F. Barbaro et al.

Summary: New data for natV(p, x) reactions were measured in the energy range of 26-70 MeV, focusing on the production of 47Sc for innovative radiotheranostic applications. The measured cross sections were compared with theoretical excitation functions calculated using the TALYS code, and the level-density parameters of the models were optimized for accurate descriptions. Different irradiation conditions were considered to estimate production yields from the determined cross sections.

Summary: The study focuses on the ability of variational approaches to reproduce exact energies and electromagnetic properties of nuclei in the sd-shell valence space using the nontrivial USD Hamiltonian. Different methods are compared and the roles of proton-neutron mixing, quadrupole, and pairing degrees of freedom are analyzed in describing the spectra of nuclei in the sd shell.

Summary: High-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy of N-18 was conducted following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O-18 beam on a Ta-181 target, leading to identification of six new states and proposing spin and parities for all located states. The research on the 0(1)(-) and 1(2)(-) excitations provides valuable constraints for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements and helps reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N-16 and N-18 simultaneously.

Summary: The direct gamma decays of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) and the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) of Pb-208 to low-lying states were investigated using a microscopic self-consistent model, showing the sensitivity of gamma decay to the isospin of the involved states. The comparison of decay widths between GDR and GQR revealed differences in the composition of their wave functions, demonstrating that gamma decay serves as a unique probe of resonance wave functions and a test ground for nuclear structure models.

Additionally, a linear correlation between α(DJ) in a nucleus around the beta-stability line and α(D) in a neutron-rich nucleus can be used to assess α(D) in neutron-rich nuclei, providing a new clue for nuclear physics studies.
