Proposed role of the local Saudi building codes in assessing the energy performance of buildings in KSA's GBRS

Amal Shamseldin

Summary: The building sector in Saudi Arabia consumes the most energy, making accurate energy efficiency assessment for Saudi Arabian buildings highly important. This article focuses on the energy performance item in Mostadam, the local Green Building Rating System in Saudi Arabia. The results of the study show that the Saudi Building Codes (SBCs) provide more efficient energy results compared to the international standard baseline used in Mostadam. However, the international standard is given priority in the assessment, and can potentially earn up to three times more points than compliance with the SBC. The study recommends updating Mostadam to include a performance option based on the SBC and increasing the points awarded to this option to match the other performance option.

Inexspensive all-season passive thin metal film for energy savings in cities

Takashi Sasaki et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an inexpensive passive thin metal film for all-season energy savings. The film allows heat to flow preferentially in one direction, achieving perfect thermal insulation. A 960m2 film installed in a Japanese hotel reduced the energy cost of air conditioning from 54 million yen to 43 million yen over 10 years, resulting in an annual energy savings of 11 million yen (US$0.1 million).

Investigation of vacuum-integrated switchable polymer dispersed liquid crystal glazing for smart window application for less energy-hungry building

Aritra Ghosh

Summary: The presence of multiple transparency levels and controllable intermediate transmission makes switchable smart glazing more attractive for energy-efficient building integration. This study investigated the thermal and optical performance of integrated polymer dispersed liquid crystal and low heat loss transparent vacuum glazing. The use of acrylic sheets reduced the system weight by 21%, making it suitable for retrofit building integration. The overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) was below 1.1 W/m2K for all ON and OFF states.

Energy savings potential of reversible photothermal windows with near infrared-selective plasmonic nanofilms

Md Anwar Jahid et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new concept of dynamic windows that utilize nanoscale solar infrared-induced plasmonic photothermal effects for reversible solar heat modulation independent of visible light conditions. Analytical models validated through experiments demonstrate the technical characteristics and thermal and optical features of these reversible photothermal windows under solar irradiation. Whole building energy simulations show that these windows have the potential to save over 18% energy in mixed climates compared to baseline models built using the most recent energy efficiency standards.

Spectral, visual, thermal, energy and circadian assessment of PDLC glazing in warm and humid climate

Veena Mathew et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation on the Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) glazing in a warm and humid climate. The study examines its effects on visual comfort, thermal performance, circadian entrainment, and energy consumption in an office room. The results show that the PDLC glazing has similar Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) and Colour Rendering Index (CRI) in both opaque and transparent states. It reflects most of the radiation under an opaque condition and provides higher Circadian Stimulus (CS) under clear states. Real-time experiments demonstrate satisfactory colour rendering and circadian effectiveness. The PDLC glazing is found to be most suitable for windows in the south and north orientations in the southern tropical climate. The observed energy consumption is 0.5 kWh/day.

Effects of edge-seal design on the mechanical and thermal performance of vacuum-insulated glazing

Wenyuan Zhu et al.

Summary: Vacuum-insulated glazing (VIG) has not gained popularity in the market due to technical challenges, especially with the edge-seal. This research identifies the effects of edge-seal design parameters on VIG performance and develops a flexible sealant that meets the requirements, including structural and thermal stress resistance and low conductivity.

Performance evaluation of a novel rotatable dynamic window integrated with a phase change material and a vacuum layer

Xiaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: A new type of rotating dynamic phase change material window (DPCMW) was designed in this study to improve building energy efficiency and avoid overheating. The DPCMW could adjust the position of the phase change material (PCM) and vacuum glass layers to change the heat flux direction and reduce building load. The performance of the DPCMW was found to be better than that of a static PCM window (SPCMW) in both winter and summer. The optimal phase transition temperature range was determined to be 23-25 degrees C, and the thicker the PCM layer, the better the energy-saving effect. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of the DPCMW.
