Three-dimension titanium phosphate aerogel for selective removal of radioactive strontium(II) from contaminated waters

Yiguo Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel TiP aerogel was developed for the selective removal of Sr(II) from radioactive wastewater. The TiP aerogel demonstrated high efficiency and selectivity, with a distribution coefficient of up to 4740.03 mL/g. It exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics and a maximum adsorption capacity of 373.6 mg/g at pH 5. The TiP aerogel also showed over 80% removal for 50 mg/L Sr2+ in real water systems. The results indicate that TiP aerogel is a promising adsorbent for the effective and selective capture of Sr(II) from radioactive wastewater.

Surface modification of ball clay minerals with gamma irradiation polymerization for removal of cerium and gadolinium ions from aqueous phase

Walaa R. Mohamed et al.

Summary: Surface modification of ball clay using gamma irradiation and chemical treatment resulted in the production of a composite sorbent with enhanced sorption capacity for gadolinium and cerium ions. The sorption mechanism was identified as ion exchange. The sorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. The composite sorbent demonstrated much higher sorption capacity compared to other sorbents in the literature. The best eluent for desorption was determined to be 0.1 M HNO3. Overall, the BC-AA-PA composite sorbent is recommended for lanthanide sorption from the liquid phase.

Utilization of modified polymeric composite supported crown ether for selective sorption and separation of various beta emitting radionuclides in simulated waste

Mahmoud G. Hamed et al.

Summary: The modified multi-functional polymeric composite was prepared by incorporating a crosslinker and a surfactant into sodium styrene sulphonate and subjecting it to radiation. The composites exhibited good transformation, as confirmed by SEM, FTIR, and DLS analysis. Batch experiments showed that the composite sorbents demonstrated higher selectivity towards La3+ and Y3+ ions compared to Gd3+ and Sr2+ ions.

A novel approach for rice straw agricultural waste utilization: Synthesis of solid aluminosilicate matrices for cesium immobilization

A. E. Panasenko et al.

Summary: A new method of utilizing rice straw as a difficult-to-recycle agricultural waste was proposed. Potassium aluminosilicate was obtained through spark plasma sintering and used to immobilize 137Cs into a solid-state matrix. The sorption properties of potassium aluminosilicate for 137Cs were investigated, and the effect of synthesis temperature on the phase composition, microstructure, and leaching rate of cesium ions was studied. The proposed approach allows for safe disposal of rice straw and addresses the issue of recycling long-lived 137Cs radionuclides from nuclear power plant operations into solid-state matrices.

Removal of 137Cs and 90Sr from simulated low-level radioactive waste using tin(IV) vanadate sorbent and its potential hazardous parameters

M. R. Abass et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the sorption of Cs-137 and/or Sr-90 from low-level radioactive waste using tin(IV) vanadate (SnV) sorbent prepared by the precipitation technique. Various analytical tools were used to analyze the structure and properties of SnV. The study found that SnV has a high sorption efficiency for Cs-137 and Sr-90, with the amount sorbed increasing with higher pH values and temperatures. The sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous.

Activated carbon additives for technetium immobilization in bentonite-based engineered barriers for radioactive waste repositories

A. V. Makarov et al.

Summary: Safe disposal of nuclear waste in a geologic repository relies on natural geologic features and engineered barriers to slow down the movement of radionuclides. Activated carbon is proposed as an effective additive to reduce pertechnetate mobility, and the interaction of technetium with a composite material consisting of bentonite and activated carbon showed effective technetium sorption.
