Effect of Hibiscus syriacus Linnaeus extract and its active constituent, saponarin, in animal models of stress-induced sleep disturbances and pentobarbital-induced sleep

Yu Ri Kim et al.

Summary: The study results suggest that the extract of Hibiscus syriacus Linnaeus flower (HSF) and its active constituent saponarin have desirable effects on anxiety, wake times, REM sleep time, and the expression of cortical GABA(A) receptor alpha 1 (GABAAR alpha 1) and c-Fos in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO). HSF extract and saponarin also restored sleep rate and sleep bout duration.

Nutritional composition and phytochemical screening in different parts of Hibiscus syriacus L.

Yunmi Park et al.

Summary: This study characterized the nutritional and biochemical composition of different parts of the national flower of Korea, Hibiscus syriacus. The results showed that the petals had high quantities of glucose, sucrose, and fumaric acid, and exhibited the highest antioxidant activity among the four units. The petals also contained the highest number of bioactive compounds, suggesting potential pharmacological activity.

3,4,5-Trihydroxycinnamic acid exerts anti-inflammatory effects on TNF-α/IFN-γ-stimulated HaCaT cells

Ji-Won Park et al.

Summary: The study showed that 3,4,5-Trihydroxycinnamic acid (THCA) exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by reducing secretion and mRNA expression of inflammatory factors in human keratinocyte cells, and inhibiting the activation of AKT, ERK, and NF-κB signaling pathways. Additionally, THCA upregulated the expression of antioxidant enzymes and activated the Nrf2 pathway, indicating its potential as an anti-inflammatory agent in activated keratinocyte cells.
