BiVO4 As a Sustainable and Emerging Photocatalyst: Synthesis Methodologies, Engineering Properties, and Its Volatile Organic Compounds Degradation Efficiency

Ganesh S. Kamble et al.

Summary: Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is an excellent bismuth-based semiconducting material with narrow band gap, good visible light absorption, unique physical and chemical characteristics, and non-toxic nature. However, its commercial utilization is limited due to poor separation and transport ability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which can be overcome by engineering/modifications of BiVO4 materials. This review provides a critical overview of advanced oxidation processes, various semiconducting nanomaterials, synthesis methodologies, engineering of properties, and the future challenges and opportunities for improving the commercial-scale application of BiVO4-based nanomaterials in VOCs degradation.

Key Considerations When Assessing Novel Fenton Catalysts: Iron Oxychloride (FeOCl) as a Case Study

Yufan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is a poor Fenton catalyst compared to ferrihydrite (Fhy) at different pH levels. Evaluation of the catalytic performance of FeOCl requires consideration of factors such as target contaminant adsorption and excessive use of H2O2.

Membrane-Confined Iron Oxychloride Nanocatalysts for Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Fenton Water Treatment

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The study achieved the degradation of organic pollutants in complex water matrices by loading iron oxychloride catalysts into the pores of a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane. The membrane, with a pore size that excludes natural organic matter, selectively exposed smaller organics to hydroxyl radicals, effectively inhibiting the degradation of organic pollutants.
