Enhancing Patient Outcomes in Aesthetic Breast Implant Procedures Using Proven Antimicrobial Breast Pocket Irrigations: A 20-Year Follow-up

Summary: This study is the largest and longest review of capsular contracture (CC) in a controlled, single-surgeon setting. The study found that antimicrobial breast pocket irrigation is effective and practical in reducing the incidence of CC, with the Betadine regimen preferred. Universal adoption of Betadine-containing antimicrobial breast pocket irrigation is recommended to reduce CC and other device-associated infections.

BIA-ALCL Epidemiology in an Aesthetic Breast Surgery Cohort of 1501 Patients

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) in a cohort of 1501 patients who received cosmetic breast augmentation between 2006 and 2016. The study found a higher prevalence of BIA-ALCL compared to previous reports, especially among patients with macrotextured devices. The importance of accurate follow-up for patients was confirmed.

Gram-Negative Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide Promotes Tumor Cell Proliferation in Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma

Summary: This study demonstrates that bacteria, rather than the implants themselves, can trigger the activation and multiplication of BIA-ALCL cancer cells in vitro. The unique response of BIA-ALCL cells to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation suggests a novel pathway for LPS to promote cancer cell proliferation via a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) receptor-mediated bacterial transformation of T-cells into malignancy.
