Triplet Excitons and Associated Efficiency-Limiting Pathways in Organic Solar Cell Blends Based on (Non-) Halogenated PBDB-T and Y-Series

Jeannine Gruene et al.

Summary: The development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) in organic photovoltaics (OPV) has led to a significant progress in power conversion efficiencies, reaching nearly 20%. However, triplet states have been found to negatively affect device performance, leading to non-radiative losses and device degradation. A study using various spin-sensitive methods and quantum-chemical calculations identified the presence of triplet excitons in OPV blends, providing insights into the pathways for triplet formation and suggesting potential for improved charge generation to enhance OPV efficiencies.

Efficient Charge Transport Driven by Strong Intermolecular Interactions in Cyclopentadithiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor Type Conjugated Copolymers

Jiyoul Lee et al.

Summary: Understanding the charge transport in donor-acceptor (D-A) type copolymers is crucial for designing high-mobility polymers. In this study, the charge transport properties of three D-A type copolymers based on cyclopentadithiophene (CDT) were investigated. It was found that CDT-PTz exhibited the best charge transport, with the lowest energetic disorder and a hole mobility of 0.79 +/- 0.01 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in field-effect transistors. The structural properties of CDT-PTz, including a rigid and planar backbone structure and a strong intramolecular dipole moment, were attributed to noncovalent N-S interactions and the strong electron-withdrawing PTz acceptor unit. These properties resulted in strong intermolecular interactions and enhanced pi-pi stacking, leading to improved mobility in CDT-PTz.

On the Interplay between CT and Singlet Exciton Emission in Organic Solar Cells with Small Driving Force and Its Impact on Voltage Loss

Tobias Fritsch et al.

Summary: The interplay between free charge carriers, charge transfer (CT) states, and singlet excitons (S-1) determines the performance of organic solar cells. In the blend, the polymer exciton dominates the radiative properties, while the non-radiative decay limits the open circuit voltage. Increasing the strength of the exciton in the optical spectra can reduce non-radiative voltage losses, not because it is more emissive. Electronic coupling between the CT state and the S-1 does not improve the open circuit voltage.

The role of charge recombination to triplet excitons in organic solar cells

Alexander J. Gillett et al.

Summary: The majority of charge recombination in organic solar cells that use NFAs occurs through non-emissive NFA triplet excitons under open-circuit conditions, reducing the open-circuit voltage. Engineering substantial hybridization between NFA triplet excitons and spin-triplet charge-transfer excitons can suppress this non-radiative recombination pathway, potentially leading to organic solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of 20% or more.
