Olefin metathesis over supported MoOx catalysts: influence of the oxide support

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: A series of supported MoOx catalysts on different oxide supports were synthesized and characterized. The results show that the oxide supports have a significant influence on the activation and surface chemistry of MoOx sites, which are controlled by the type and number of surface hydroxyls.

Active Site Descriptors from 95Mo NMR Signatures of Silica-Supported Mo-Based Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

Zachariah J. Berkson et al.

Summary: This article investigated the relationship between olefin metathesis activity of silica-supported molybdenum oxides and metal loading and preparation conditions. Results showed that similar catalysts with different compositions exhibit different reaction properties. The catalyst synthesized via surface organometallic chemistry showed better performance than a classical catalyst with similar metal loading. Solid-state Mo-95 NMR analysis revealed four distinct surface Mo dioxo sites with different distributions depending on the catalyst preparation methods. The intensity of a specific deshielded Mo-95 NMR signal was linked to reducibility and catalytic activity.

Promoting active site renewal in heterogeneous olefin metathesis catalysts

Terry Z. H. Gani et al.

Summary: The authors identify a dynamic site renewal and decay cycle, mediated by proton transfers involving proximal BrOnsted acidic OH groups, which operates concurrently with the Chauvin cycle and could address roadblocks associated with industrial metathesis processes. This cycle can be manipulated using small quantities of promoter olefins to drastically increase steady-state propylene metathesis rates, with negligible promoter consumption, showing potential applicability to other reactions. The increase in activity and reduction of operating temperature requirements were also observed on MoOx/SiO2 catalysts, indicating the broad scope of this strategy in addressing major challenges in industrial metathesis processes.

Summary: The study investigates the increased activity of MoOx catalysts by surface modification and finds that specific anchoring surface hydroxyls control the number of active sites and the reaction rate of propylene metathesis, while the surface acid nature does not directly affect the number of active sites.

Selective Reduction of Carboxylic Acids to Aldehydes with Promoted MoO3 Catalysts

Laura A. Gomez et al.

Summary: Selective activation of renewable carboxylic acids on promoted molybdenum oxides to form alcohols and aldehydes is reported in this study. Addition of a very small loading of Pt significantly enhances rates of selective deoxygenation at lower temperatures but diminishes rates at elevated temperatures due to over-reduction of the support. Moreover, incorporation of Pt clusters on MoO3 decreases the apparent activation barrier for acid conversion and highlights the significant role of site regeneration facilitated by hydrogen splitting and spillover.

Olefin-Surface Interactions: A Key Activity Parameter in Silica-Supported Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

Zachariah J. Berkson et al.

Summary: This study compares the reactivity of different types of Mo-based metathesis catalysts for the metathesis of long-chain alpha-olefins at low temperatures. It is found that catalysts based on supported Mo oxo species exhibit strong activity dependence on the alpha-olefin chain length, while molecular and supported Mo alkylidenes do not show such dependence. Furthermore, the decrease in activity is attributed to the strong adsorption of internal olefin metathesis products on supported Mo oxo catalysts. This study highlights the importance of support and active site composition in catalytic activity and emphasizes the need to consider adsorption in catalyst design.

Computational Insights into Active Site Formation during Alkene Metathesis over a MoOx/SiO2 Catalyst: The Role of Surface Silanols

Jaroslaw Handzlik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the initiation mechanisms for alkene metathesis on the MoOx/SiO2 catalyst using comprehensive density functional theory studies, revealing the key role of surface silanol groups in reduction processes and alkene activation. The proposed silanol-assisted mechanisms are predicted to be more kinetically and thermodynamically accessible, providing advantages over commonly assumed mechanisms and suggesting a preferential activation pathway by propene for the Mo(IV) species.
