Reactive Capture of CO2: Opportunities and Challenges

Rachel E. Siegel et al.

Summary: Reactive capture of CO2 (RCC) involves integrating CO2 capture with the conversion of captured CO2 into a product. This method has the potential to save significant energy compared to traditional CO2 capture and release processes as it does not include a step for thermal release of CO2. The Perspective highlights prior contributions to CO2 capture chemistry, thermal RCC, and electrochemically driven RCC, focusing on opportunities and challenges for future development. RCC requires a multidisciplinary approach, bridging industry, chemistry, chemical engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Operando Spectroscopic Analysis of Axial Oxygen-Coordinated Single-Sn-Atom Sites for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Yachen Deng et al.

Summary: A series of single-Sn-atom catalysts with well-defined structures were developed as model systems to explore their electrochemical reactivity toward CO2RR. The selectivity and activity of CO2 reduction to formic acid on Sn-single-atom sites were found to be correlated with Sn(IV)-N4 moieties axially coordinated with oxygen (O-Sn-N4), achieving an optimal HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of 89.4% with a partial current density (jHCOOH) of 74.8 mA·cm-2 at -1.0 V vs RHE. Surface-bound bidentate tin carbonate species were captured during CO2RR, and the electronic and coordination structures of the single-Sn-atom species under reaction conditions were determined.

Halogen-Incorporated Sn Catalysts for Selective Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate

Tian Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, halogen (F, Cl, Br or I) was introduced into Sn catalyst to enhance its catalytic performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce formate. The presence of halogen was confirmed by characterizations, which resulted in a more positive valence state of Sn and tuned the adsorption strength of the key intermediate towards formate formation.

Electrolyzer energy dominates separation costs in state-of-the-art CO2 electrolyzers: Implications for single-pass CO2 utilization

Thomas Moore et al.

Summary: In low-temperature CO2 electrolysis, the optimal single-pass CO2 conversion for ethylene production is typically low, around 5%-10%, but larger optima can be found with very low H2 faradic efficiency. Eliminating carbonate crossover strategies require more energy than downstream gas separation if they increase the cell potential by X0.2 V. However, when considering CAPEX, the break-even voltage increases to -0.4 to 0.8 V for electricity prices ranging from 6c/kWh to 1.5c/kWh. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining near-optimal electrolyzer performance over reducing or eliminating downstream gas separations.

Glycerol oxidation-assisted electrochemical CO2 reduction for the dual production of formate

Yuhou Pei et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method of substituting the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction with glycerol oxidation reaction for efficient CO2 electroreduction, which achieves the coproduction of formate at both the cathode and anode. A highly efficient CO2ER system is successfully established with a specific catalyst, demonstrating the potential of non-noble metal catalysts for organic oxidation reactions.

Probing the role of surface hydroxyls for Bi, Sn and In catalysts during CO2 Reduction

Jiayu Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the active sites of Bi, Sn, and In catalysts are Bi-0, SnO, and In2O3, with their affinities to hydroxyls in the order of Bi-0 < SnO < In2O3. Formate production involves two parallel pathways, one involving hydroxyls and the other not. The participation of hydroxyl groups in CO2RR follows the order of Bi < Sn < In.
