UV Light Is No Longer Required for the Photoactivation of 1,3,4-Oxadiazolines

Katarzyna Orlowska et al.

Summary: Carbenes are key players in numerous organic transformations. Stabilized diazo carbonyl compounds are the dominant source of electrophilic carbenes. However, the hazardous nature of nonstabilized analogues requires their in situ generation from stable precursors. Among these precursors, 1,3,4-oxadiazolines serve as diazoalkane surrogates under UV light irradiation. The visible-light-induced activation of oxadiazolines by triplet energy transfer catalysis alters their reactivity and enables the generation of carbenes, leading to the formation of valuable spirocyclopropanes.

Programmed Polyene Cyclization Enabled by Chromophore Disruption

Megan M. Solans et al.

Summary: A new polyene cyclization strategy utilizing beta-ionyl derivatives has been developed. The method involves photoinduced deconjugation of the extended pi-system within these chromophores, leading to the generation of a contrathermodynamic polyene which can then undergo a Heck bicyclization reaction. This cascade reaction improves on the regioselectivity achieved by existing biomimetic tactics and is tolerant of both electron-rich and electron-deficient (hetero)aryl groups. The utility of this approach has been demonstrated through the diverted total synthesis of taxodione and salviasperanol, two isomeric abietane diterpenes that were previously inaccessible via the same synthetic pathway.
