Efficient solvent- and hydrogen-free upcycling of high-density polyethylene into separable cyclic hydrocarbons

Junjie Du et al.

Summary: Ru nanoparticles on HZSM-5 catalyze solvent- and hydrogen-free upcycling of high-density polyethylene into separable linear (C-1 to C-6) and cyclic (C-7 to C-15) hydrocarbons. Plastic pollution, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, requires a sustainable and economically viable recycling method that avoids consumable materials. This study demonstrates the catalytic conversion of high-density polyethylene using Ru nanoparticles on HZSM-5, resulting in a separable distribution of linear and cyclic hydrocarbons.

Combined Experimental and Computational Study of the Mechanism of Acceptorless Alcohol Dehydrogenation by POCOP Iridium Pincer Complexes

Alexey V. Polukeev et al.

Summary: This study found that dilution has a significant impact on the performance of catalysts and the acceleration mechanism of alcohol dehydrogenation is related to the rate-limiting mass transfer of hydrogen. Experimental and computational methods showed that dehydrogenation has two high-barrier steps and the re-hydrogenation of dehydrogenation products is responsible for the rate retardation in concentrated solutions of the catalyst.

Assessing the feasibility of chemical recycling via steam cracking of untreated plastic waste pyrolysis oils: Feedstock impurities, product yields and coke formation

Marvin Kusenberg et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling of plastic waste to base chemicals via pyrolysis and subsequent steam cracking shows potential to overcome limitations in current plastic waste recycling methods. In this study, steam cracking of two types of plastic waste pyrolysis oils was evaluated, and it was found that they have high ethylene yields but also produce significant amounts of heavy products. Contaminants were identified as a key driver for coke formation.

Origin of Regioselectivity in the Dehydrogenation of Alkanes by Pincer-Iridium Complexes: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

Soumik Biswas et al.

Summary: The PCP-pincer iridium complexes exhibit high regioselectivity for the transfer dehydrogenation of n-alkanes, while the closely related PCOP and POCOP complexes do not. The difference in regioselectivity is a true kinetic phenomenon, not a result of isomerization subsequent to the formation of free alpha-olefin. The different regioselectivity of the POCOPIr vs PCPIr catalysts is attributable to the different rate-determining steps of their respective catalytic cycles, which can be explained in terms of different electronic effects of O versus CH2 linker exerted through the pincer aromatic ring.
