Tip-Enhanced Dark Exciton Nanoimaging and Local Strain Control in Monolayer WSe2

Kathryn Hasz et al.

Summary: By combining tip-enhanced photoluminescence spectroscopy and atomic force induced strain control, we successfully achieved nanoscale imaging of dark excitons in WSe2 and observed their response to local strain. Dark exciton emission was facilitated by out-of-plane picocavity Purcell enhancement, leading to highly localized emission with higher spatial resolution compared to bright exciton nanoimaging. Furthermore, tip-antenna-induced dark exciton emission was enhanced in areas of higher strain associated with bubbles. Active force control showed that dark exciton emission was more sensitive to strain, with both compressive and tensile lattice deformation facilitating emission. This interplay between localized strain and Purcell effects provides novel pathways for nanomechanical exciton emission control.

Phonon-assisted upconversion in twisted two-dimensional semiconductors

Yuchen Dai et al.

Summary: This letter investigates phonon-assisted photon upconversion (UPC) in twisted 2D semiconductors, where an inverted contrast between UPC and conventional photoluminescence (PL) of WSe2 twisted bilayer emerges. A 4-fold UPC enhancement is achieved in the 5.5 degrees twisted bilayer while PL weakens by half. The rotation-angle-dependent UPC enhancement is attributed to reduced interlayer exciton conversion efficiency driven by lattice relaxation and enhanced pump efficiency resulting from spectral redshift. This counterintuitive phenomenon provides a novel insight into the effect of twisted angle on UPC and light-matter interactions in 2D semiconductors. Furthermore, the UPC enhancement platform with various superimposable means offers an effective method for lighting bilayers and expanding the application prospect of 2D stacked van der Waals devices.

Full Control of Plasmonic Nanocavities Using Gold Decahedra-on-Mirror Constructs with Monodisperse Facets

Shu Hu et al.

Summary: Bottom-up assembly of nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavities enables precise inter-metal gap control down to approximate to 0.4 nm for confining light to sub-nanometer scales, thereby opening opportunities for developing innovative nanophotonic devices. However limited understanding, prediction, and optimization of light coupling and the difficulty of controlling nanoparticle facet shapes restricts the use of such building blocks.

Giant Out-of-Plane Exciton Emission Enhancement in Two-Dimensional Indium Selenide via a Plasmonic Nanocavity

Xiaotian Bao et al.

Summary: A giant enhancement of up to 34000 for out-of-plane (OP) exciton emission in indium selenide (InSe) is achieved via a designed plasmonic nanocavity consisting of a silver nanocube over a gold film. The large enhancement is attributed to the induced OP local electric field (Ez) within the nanocavity, which facilitates effective OP exciton-plasmon interaction. The nanoantenna effect resulting from the interaction also improves the directivity of spontaneous radiation, providing a potential avenue for designing on-chip photonic devices with an OP dipole orientation.

Vibrational Stark Effects: Ionic Influence on Local Fields

Demelza Wright et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that molecules containing vibrational Stark shift reporters can be used to measure DC electric fields in situ. However, it is found that the uniform field DFT calculations cannot accurately model the behavior of the three strongest vibrational modes in molecules forming a monolayer on an electrode. It is shown that the measured Stark shifts are explained by partial electrical double-layer penetration into the molecular layer, which is sensitive to the local environment.

Plasmonic Nanocavity Induced Coupling and Boost of Dark Excitons in Monolayer WSe2 at Room Temperature

Tsz Wing Lo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the optical behavior of spin-forbidden excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides at room temperature and demonstrates that the radiative decay rate of these dark excitons can be enhanced through coupling with a metal nanoparticle-on-mirror cavity. The enhanced emission compensates for the weak radiation nature of dark excitons. This research is important for understanding exciton spin relaxation and valley coherence, and has potential applications in quantum computing and nanoscale optoelectronics.

Room-Temperature Low-Voltage Control of Excitonic Emission in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Summary: Charge doping on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers allows for reversible tuning of charged exciton emission with very modest voltages, controlling radiative lifetime and intensity. The dynamics of neutral exciton ionization at increasing electron doping follows the Fermi-Dirac distribution, providing experimental values for effective masses of electrons and holes at room temperature. Tunable excitonic emission at room temperature, preserving coherence, has great promise for quantum technologies requiring deterministic coupling with integrated photonic and plasmonic devices.
