Design Principles for High-Temperature Superconductors with a Hydrogen-Based Alloy Backbone at Moderate Pressure

Zihan Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-based superconductors offer a way to achieve room-temperature superconductivity, but their immediate application is limited by the high pressures required. This study proposes a strategy for designing high-temperature superconductors at low pressures by alloying small-radius elements and hydrogen to form ternary H-based superconductors with alloy backbones.

Effect of Magnetic Impurities on Superconductivity in LaH10

Dmitrii Semenok et al.

Summary: Polyhydrides are a new class of superconducting materials with high critical parameters that show promise for sensor applications. A study of lanthanum superhydride LaH10, the best known superconductor of this class, is complicated by its large upper critical magnetic field exceeding 120-160 T. The study revealed that replacing La atoms with magnetic Nd atoms significantly suppresses the superconductivity in LaH10, allowing for control of the compound's critical parameters. By using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, the study also found that (La,Nd)H-10 exhibits a linear H-C2(T) relationship proportional to |T - T-C|, challenging the applicability of the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model for polyhydrides. These experimental findings provide new evidence of the isotropic (s-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in lanthanum decahydride.

Bianca Haberl et al.

Summary: High-pressure neutron diffraction is a crucial technique for making and understanding novel hydride superconductors, enabling the direct determination of elemental stoichiometries and atomic positions of light elements like hydrogen or deuterium. This study highlights the current advancements in high-pressure neutron diffraction for hydride superconductors and metal hydrides at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, emphasizing the importance of powdered hydride samples and the need for deuterium in the process. The article also discusses the advantages of angular access and data representation at the SNAP beamline.

Synthesis of Yttrium Superhydride Superconductor with a Transition Temperature up to 262 K by Catalytic Hydrogenation at High Pressures

Elliot Snider et al.

Summary: The recent observation of room-temperature superconductivity is expected to drive the discovery of new, dense, hydrogen-rich materials, including rare earth metal superhydrides. A study reported the synthesis of a yttrium superhydride that exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature of 262 K at 182 ± 8 GPa, with the assistance of a palladium thin film. It was found that the phonon-mediated superconductivity is established by the observation of zero resistance, an isotope effect, and the reduction of T-c under an external magnetic field, with the upper critical magnetic field at 103 T at zero temperature.

Superconductivity at 253 K in lanthanum-yttrium ternary hydrides

Dmitrii Semenok et al.

Summary: Through high-pressure synthesis, a series of lanthanum-yttrium ternary hydrides were discovered, including novel compounds such as cubic hexahydride (La,Y)H6 and decahydrides (La,Y) H-10 with high critical temperature and magnetic field. The critical current density in (La,Y)H-10 is comparable to that of commercial superconducting wires. These findings represent the first examples of ternary high-Tc superconducting hydrides and demonstrate a new method for stabilizing hydrides.

LaBH8: Towards high-Tc low-pressure superconductivity in ternary superhydrides

Simone Di Cataldo et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new high-Tc hydride superconductor, LaBH8, is computationally predicted to have a Tc of 126 K at a pressure of 50 GPa, making it thermodynamically stable above 100 GPa and dynamically stable down to 40 GPa. LaBH8's unique structure, a ternary sodalite-like hydride, is stabilized by a metallic hydrogen sublattice supported by La-B scaffolding, allowing for a more efficient packing of atoms than in binary sodalite hydrides due to the combination of elements of different sizes.
