Substantially enhanced homogeneous plastic flow in hierarchically nanodomained amorphous alloys

Ge Wu et al.

Summary: To alleviate mechanical instability of major shear bands in metallic glasses, a compositional design approach was used to introduce nanoscale chemical heterogeneity, resulting in a metallic glass with a large homogeneous plastic flow at room temperature. The alloy showed elastic strain of about 2% and underwent highly homogeneous plastic flow of about 40% strain in compression, surpassing mono- and hetero-structured metallic glasses. Dynamic atomic intermixing occurred between the nanodomains during plastic flow, preventing interface failure. This design opens up potential for the development of amorphous materials with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

Homogeneous solution assembled Turing structures with near zero strain semi-coherence interface

Yuanming Zhang et al.

Summary: Turing structures with near zero strain semi-coherence interfaces can be constructed in homogeneous solutions subject to diffusion kinetics. Utilizing the hard-soft acid-base theory in coordination binding design can enhance molecule diffusion motion, expanding the library of Turing structure designs.

Functional CeOx nanoglues for robust atomically dispersed catalysts

Xu Li et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts make efficient use of noble metals but suffer from limited stability. This study presents a strategy of confining atomically dispersed metals on oxide nanoclusters, which are immobilized on a high-surface-area support, to enhance stability. The resulting catalyst exhibits improved performance in CO oxidation under both oxidizing and reducing environments at high temperatures.

Mastering the surface strain of platinum catalysts for efficient electrocatalysis

Tianou He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by depositing ultrathin Pt shells on palladium-based nanocubes, strain in the Pt(100) lattice can be induced and adjusted, leading to tunable electrocatalytic activity for specific reactions. By controlling the lattice strain, the researchers were able to optimize the performance of Pt catalysts for a wide range of reactions, showing different strain-activity correlations for different reactions.

Ordered clustering of single atomic Te vacancies in atomically thin PtTe2 promotes hydrogen evolution catalysis

Xinzhe Li et al.

Summary: Exposing and stabilizing undercoordinated platinum sites to optimize their adsorption properties offers a desirable strategy for developing efficient Pt-based electrocatalysts. In this study, atomically thin PtTe2 nanosheets with single atomic Te vacancies were used as model electrocatalysts, resulting in enhanced activity and stability in hydrogen evolution reaction by precisely regulating the Pt catalytic sites.

Nanoscale Turing patterns in a bismuth monolayer

Yuki Fuseya et al.

Summary: Research has shown that strained atomic bismuth monolayers assembled on the surface of NbSe2 can display Turing patterns, indicating that Turing patterns can occur at the atomic scale in hard condensed-matter systems. The macroscopic patterns seen in biological systems, such as animal skin, can also be described by Turing's reaction-diffusion theory.

Steam-created grain boundaries for methane C-H activation in palladium catalysts

Weixin Huang et al.

Summary: The study showed that high-temperature steam pretreatment can enhance the mass-specific reaction rate for carbon-hydrogen (C-H) activation in methane oxidation on palladium catalysts. Experimental and theoretical methods demonstrated that crystal twinning increased grain boundary density, leading to higher reactivity.
