Pathogenesis, epidemiology and control of Group A Streptococcus infection

Stephan Brouwer et al.

Summary: Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is highly adapted to the human host and can cause various infections. The fluctuating global epidemiology of GAS is characterized by the emergence of new clones with better adaptability to the infection niche or host immunity. The increasing antibiotic resistance in GAS poses a threat to treatment, highlighting the need for safe and effective vaccines. This review summarizes recent developments in understanding GAS, including epidemiology, clinical features, virulence, and drug resistance mechanisms.

A global snapshot on the prevalent macrolide-resistant emm types of Group A Streptococcus worldwide, their phenotypes and their resistance marker genotypes during the last two decades: A systematic review

Rayane Rafei et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the global distribution of macrolide-resistant Group A Streptococcus (MRGAS) clones based on a comprehensive analysis of MRGAS isolates from the past two decades. It highlights the association between specific emm types and macrolide resistance phenotype or genotype, emphasizing the importance of nationwide surveillance of MRGAS.

Nonimmune antibody interactions of Group A Streptococcus M and M-like proteins

Jori O. Mills et al.

Summary: M and M-like proteins play a significant role in the virulence of the bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes by recruiting immunoglobulins G and A through Fc-binding. These interactions may have important effects on immune responses at mucosal surfaces and secretions, as well as aiding in evasion of phagocytic killing in nonimmune blood. Additionally, Fc-binding has potential therapeutic applications in treating tissue damage caused by S. pyogenes infection.

A brief review on Group A Streptococcus pathogenesis and vaccine development

Sowmya Ajay Castro et al.

Summary: Streptococcus pyogenes, known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a Gram-positive human-exclusive pathogen responsible for severe infections and diseases. While there has been a decrease in GAS infections in some countries, global outbreaks still occur, highlighting the need for an effective vaccine. Challenges remain in the development of a universal GAS vaccine, despite increased understanding of GAS pathogenesis and transmission.
