Reproducible brain-wide association studies require thousands of individuals

Summary: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has greatly advanced our understanding of the human brain, but similar progress has not been made in mental health research. By analyzing three large neuroimaging datasets, researchers found that brain-wide association studies (BWAS) had smaller effect sizes than previously thought, leading to underpowered studies, inflated effect sizes, and replication failures. As sample sizes increased, replication rates improved and effect size inflation decreased. Functional MRI, cognitive tests, and multivariate methods showed more robust effects in BWAS. Smaller than expected brain-phenotype associations and population subsample variability explain the widespread replication failures in BWAS. Reproducibility in BWAS requires samples with thousands of individuals.

The Ventral and Dorsal Default Mode Networks Are Dissociably Modulated by the Vividness and Valence of Imagined Events

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the brain's default mode network is active during future imagination, and this process can be decomposed into two psychological processes linked to different subcomponents of the DMN. By manipulating the vividness and valence of imagined events, researchers found that different subcomponents of the DMN respond differently, providing strong evidence for a neurocognitive dissociation between constructing novel, imagined events from memory and evaluating these events.

Exploring word memorability: How well do different word properties explain item free-recall probability?

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between word memorability and lexical, semantic, and affective properties using free recall data from 147 participants. The findings suggest that semantic dimensions such as animacy, usefulness, and size are strongly related to recall probability. These results were further supported by replication in a separate study with 532 words and 116 participants, indicating the importance of semantic and function-related psycholinguistic properties in verbal memory processes.
