Laboratory Constraints on the Neutron-Spin Coupling of feV-Scale Axions

Junyi Lee et al.

Summary: Ultralight axionlike particles can contribute to the dark matter near the Sun, leading to a distinct, stochastic signature in terrestrial experiments. Through the reanalysis of data from a K-3He comagnetometer, a new likelihood-based formalism is used to search for these particles, and a stricter upper limit on the neutron-spin coupling is found compared to previous laboratory bounds. However, no positive evidence for a dark-matter axion is observed through analysis of the experiment's magnetic power spectrum.

Response of atomic spin-based sensors to magnetic and nonmagnetic perturbations

Mikhail Padniuk et al.

Summary: Searches for pseudo-magnetic spin couplings require sensitive detection techniques. Numerical simulations comparing the performance of SERF magnetometry and co-magnetometry show that the co-magnetometer has a higher response sensitivity and can be used for the detection of ultra-light bosons.

New constraints on axion-like dark matter using a Floquet quantum detector

Itay M. Bloch et al.

Summary: Dark matter, a longstanding mystery in physics, remains unknown in its elementary composition. In this study, we employed a precision quantum detector to search for non-gravitational interactions between axion-like dark matter and atomic spins. By utilizing a spin-polarized xenon gas detector, we were able to observe coherent interactions with the background dark matter field. The results provide improved constraints on the properties of dark matter and its potential interactions with other particles.

Strong coupling of alkali-metal spins to noble-gas spins with an hour-long coherence time

R. Shaham et al.

Summary: In this study, we achieved strong coherent coupling between noble-gas spins and optically accessible spins of an alkali-metal vapour through the accumulation of stochastic spin-exchange collisions. The coupling strength obtained was ten times higher than the decay rate and we were able to actively control the coupling using an external magnetic field. This approach could lead to fast and efficient interfaces for noble-gas spins, enabling applications in quantum sensing and information.

Upper Limit on the QCD Axion Mass from Isolated Neutron Star Cooling

Malte Buschmann et al.

Summary: Researchers found that four nearby isolated neutron stars (NSs) and PSR J0659 are ideal objects for studying the cooling phenomenon of axions. However, the study showed no evidence of axions in the data. The research further constrained the mass of axions in the context of the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov QCD axion model.

Limits on Axions and Axionlike Particles within the Axion Window Using a Spin-Based Amplifier

Yuanhong Wang et al.

Summary: Searches for axion and axionlike particles can provide insights into some of the most profound mysteries of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy. The spin-based amplifier technique is used to constrain the existence of these hypothetical particles and measure the upper limit of coupling constants by searching for an exotic dipole-dipole interaction between spins.

Spectral signatures of axionlike dark matter

Alexander V. Gramolin et al.

Summary: This article investigates the spectral line shapes of axionlike dark matter and discusses their importance in optimizing experimental design and data analysis. The authors extend previous results on axion-photon and axion-gluon couplings to the case of gradient coupling and examine the directional sensitivity of the corresponding haloscope. They also analyze the daily and annual modulations of the gradient signal caused by Earth's motions, which could serve as important evidence for the detection of axionlike particles in our Galaxy's halo.

Quantum Interface for Noble-Gas Spins Based on Spin-Exchange Collisions

Or Katz et al.

Summary: An ensemble of noble-gas nuclear spins is a unique quantum system that can maintain coherence for long periods of time at room temperature and above. By colliding with alkali-metal atoms, these spins can interface with other quantum systems while preserving their coherence. This allows for efficient, controllable, and deterministic entanglement and exchange of excitations.

Search for axion-like dark matter with spin-based amplifiers

Min Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reports on the search for axion-like dark matter using a quantum sensor with enhanced potential signals. By utilizing hyperpolarized long-lived nuclear spins as pre-amplifiers, the study achieved ultrahigh magnetic sensitivity and constrained the parameter space of interactions between nucleons and axion-like particles. The experiment significantly improved on previous laboratory constraints and exceeded bounds from astrophysical observations.

Stochastic fluctuations of bosonic dark matter

Gary P. Centers et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that constraints inferred from several previous null experiments searching for ultralight bosonic dark matter were overestimated by factors ranging from 3 to 10, due to not considering the characteristic coherence time of the dark matter field. Laboratory measurements need to take into account the stochastic nature of such a virialized ultralight field when interpreting data.

Stochastic properties of ultralight scalar field gradients

Mariangela Lisanti et al.

Summary: Ultralight axionlike particles are well-studied dark matter candidates that can be treated as oscillating scalar fields near the Solar System with a coherence time of about 10^6 oscillations. It is crucial to consider the stochastic behavior of the axion field gradient when analyzing data from axion direct detection experiments, as failing to do so may lead to missing a true axion signal. The first complete stochastic treatment for the gradient of the axion field has been presented, along with efficient methods for likelihood-based data analysis that can be applied to any axion signal regardless of coherence time.
