Modelling the coupled mercury-halogen-ozone cycle in the central Arctic during spring

Shaddy Ahmed et al.

Summary: Near-surface mercury and ozone depletion events occur in the lowest part of the atmosphere during Arctic spring, driven by reactive halogen radicals released from snow, ice, and aerosols. This study added Arctic bromine and chlorine chemistry to a model to simulate the hourly and daily variability of Arctic mercury depletion. The model predicts that bromine chemistry is a major contributor to elemental mercury oxidation and that most oxidized mercury deposited to land-based snow is re-emitted to the atmosphere.

Evidence that Pacific tuna mercury levels are driven by marine methylmercury production and anthropogenic inputs

Anais Medieu et al.

Summary: A study finds that mercury levels in Pacific Ocean tuna vary spatially, with the highest concentrations near Asia and the lowest in the western and central Pacific. These differences are primarily attributed to the depth of the seawater methylmercury peak near low-oxygen zones. The mercury hotspot near Asia is likely influenced by elevated atmospheric mercury concentrations and/or mercury river inputs. The study suggests that recent anthropogenic mercury release in Asia contributes to current human mercury exposure.

Overview of the MOSAiC expedition-Atmosphere INTRODUCTION

Matthew D. Shupe et al.

Summary: With the Arctic rapidly changing, there is a crucial need to observe, understand, and model these changes. The MOSAiC expedition successfully documented and characterized various aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system through a comprehensive observational program. The observations revealed the significant influence of atmospheric variability and highlighted the higher temperatures and moisture near the sea ice edge during summer. The obtained data will support further research and modeling capabilities in the Arctic.

Climate change drives rapid decadal acidification in the Arctic Ocean from 1994 to 2020

Di Qi et al.

Summary: The Arctic Ocean has been rapidly warming and experiencing sea ice loss in recent decades, leading to significant acidification. The melting sea ice exposes seawater, allowing for the rapid uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide, resulting in sharp declines in pH and aragonite saturation. Future projections suggest that Arctic acidification will continue to worsen.

Updated trends for atmospheric mercury in the Arctic: 1995-2018

Katrina MacSween et al.

Summary: The concentration of atmospheric mercury in the Arctic has been decreasing over the past 20 years, although not uniformly. The lowest mercury concentrations were observed in the fall in the sub-Arctic region, while the highest concentrations were found in the spring in the high-Arctic region. The variability in trends across different sites may be influenced by local chemistry and environmental changes.

Arctic atmospheric mercury: Sources and changes

Ashu Dastoor et al.

Summary: Global anthropogenic and legacy mercury emissions are the main sources of Arctic mercury contamination, transported to the Arctic primarily through the atmosphere. This review examines the global anthropogenic sources of mercury emissions and the recent changes in mercury transport and deposition to the Arctic using models. The study finds that meteorological changes and anthropogenic emissions have significant impacts on mercury deposition and air concentrations in the Arctic.

Mercury isotope evidence for Arctic summertime re-emission of mercury from the cryosphere

Beatriz Ferreira Araujo et al.

Summary: During Arctic springtime, atmospheric elemental mercury is oxidized and deposited to the cryosphere by halogen radicals. This is followed by a summertime peak in atmospheric mercury, which is primarily attributed to terrestrial mercury inputs to the Arctic Ocean. The isotope signatures of mercury in the Arctic atmosphere, marine environment, and terrestrial sources reflect the re-emission of mercury deposited during spring. The study suggests that terrestrial mercury inputs remain in the marine ecosystem without substantial loss to the global atmosphere, but may have effects on food webs. The thawing of permafrost due to Arctic warming leads to increased transport of soil mercury to the Arctic Ocean, where it is buried in marine sediment rather than emitted to the global atmosphere.

Automated identification of local contamination in remote atmospheric composition time series

Ivo Beck et al.

Summary: Atmospheric observations in remote locations provide an opportunity to study trace gas and particle concentrations in pristine environments, but contamination from local sources poses challenges. This study introduces a new method, the pollution detection algorithm (PDA), to identify primary pollution in remote atmospheric datasets. The PDA is able to accurately flag polluted data by analyzing concentration derivatives and applying various filters. The method has been successfully applied to different datasets and proven to be a useful and flexible tool without reliance on ancillary measurements.

Arctic mercury cycling

Ashu Dastoor et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive assessment of the present-day total mercury mass balance in the Arctic. The majority of mercury is transported to the Arctic via air and ocean transport, and the deposition mainly occurs in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in soils. Rivers and coastal erosion transfer a significant amount of terrestrial mercury to the Arctic Ocean, in approximate balance with net terrestrial mercury deposition. The revised Arctic Ocean mercury mass balance suggests that the deposition to the ocean and mercury burial in inner-shelf sediments are underestimated, calling for the need for seasonal observations.
