Summary: For over three decades, infectious diseases have caused significant economic losses in the global shrimp industry, with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) being one of the deadliest pathogens. WSSV modulates host metabolism by affecting glycolysis, TCA cycle, glutaminolysis, and lipid metabolism, with the PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway playing a critical role in activating the WSSV-induced Warburg effect. Understanding these metabolic pathways and signaling mechanisms is crucial for developing effective anti-WSSV strategies.

Replacement of fish meal with fermented plant proteins in the aquafeed industry: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Muziri Mugwanya et al.

Summary: Fishmeal is widely used in aquaculture feed, but its high cost and declining wild fish stocks necessitate the search for sustainable alternatives. Fermented plant proteins have gained attention as substitutes for fishmeal due to their nutritional quality and low cost. A meta-analysis showed that replacing fishmeal with fermented plant proteins improved growth, feed utilization, antioxidant and digestive enzyme activities in aquaculture species. However, the effect was influenced by fishmeal substitution levels and aquaculture species, with no significant differences in survival. Carnivorous marine species had lower growth rates and protein efficiency ratio, while freshwater species exhibited poor feed conversion rates.
