Multi-group radiation diffusion convergence in low-density foam experiments

Summary: The present study provides a comprehensive analysis of a Marshak radiation wave moving through an iron-oxide foam using the MDART model. It reveals that under-resolving the group structure can lead to erroneous conclusions in the analysis of supersonic radiation wave experiments, and highlights the possibility of incorrectly attributing certain experimental outcomes to physical effects due to poor simulation practice.

The analysis of neutron backscatter edges proves to be a sensitive diagnostic method for evaluating the hydrodynamic conditions of the dense fuel, and synthetic neutron spectra from radiation-hydrodynamics simulations are used to assess this analysis.
