Dietary flavanols restore hippocampal-dependent memory in older adults with lower diet quality and lower habitual flavanol consumption

Adam M. Brickman et al.

Summary: Dietary flavanols, found in certain fruits and vegetables, have been associated with cognitive aging. In a large-scale study, habitual flavanol consumption and diet quality were positively correlated with hippocampal-dependent memory. Although the intervention did not improve memory in all participants after 1 year, it restored memory in those with lower diet quality or lower habitual flavanol consumption.

Potential of algae-derived alginate oligosaccharides and β-glucan to counter inflammation in adult zebrafish intestine

Saima Rehman et al.

Summary: Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) can inhibit soybean-induced intestinal inflammation in zebrafish model, with low molecular weight AOS (AL) suppressing inflammatory gene expression and high molecular weight AOS (AH) negatively regulating the immune system. AOS and β-glucan (BG) can restore the expression levels of inflammatory genes altered by soybean diet to the control group level.

Effects of Ecologically Relevant Concentrations of Cadmium on the Microbiota, Short-Chain Fatty Acids, and FFAR2 Expression in Zebrafish

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of cadmium (Cd) can affect neurodevelopment, potentially leading to neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms behind Cd-induced developmental neurotoxicity are not yet fully understood, particularly in relation to the disruption of gut microbiota. In this study, zebrafish larvae were exposed to Cd and significant changes in gut microbial composition were observed. Decreases in certain bacterial genera were found, along with alterations in the concentrations of specific fatty acids. These findings suggest that the gut-brain axis, mediated by FFAR(2), may be involved in Cd-induced neurodevelopmental toxicity.

Summary: This study investigated whether gallic acid could alleviate comorbid visceral pain and depression by reducing the expression of the P2X7 receptor. The results demonstrated that gallic acid was able to relieve pain and depression, while also reducing the expressions of the P2X7 receptor and p-ERK1/2. Gallic acid treatment also decreased inflammatory cytokines IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha levels, while increasing IL-10 levels in the serum.

Role of metabolites derived from gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease

Lie Zheng et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, the improved gut microbiota has been recognized to play a crucial role in health and disease pathogenesis. Metabolites, produced through microbial metabolism, are considered as a major way for gut microbiota to interact with the host. The composition and function of the microbiota can be altered, as seen in the metabolite profiles of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This paper focuses on defining the key classes of microbial-derived metabolites that are changed in IBD, describing the pathophysiological basis of this association, and identifying precision therapeutic modulation in the future.

Inflammatory bowel disease-A peek into the bacterial community shift and algae-based ?biotic? approach to combat the disease

Viswanath Kiron et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was originally associated with industrialized nations but has now spread globally due to the popularity of ultra-processed food and lack of proper strategies to avoid foodborne microbes. Imbalance in bacteria, intestinal permeability, and dysbiosis are key factors in IBD. Using probiotics, prebiotics from algae, and a synbiotic strategy could help combat IBD by controlling pathogen proliferation and promoting beneficial bacteria growth.

Colitis-associated intestinal microbiota regulates brain glycine and host behavior in mice

Maryana Morozova et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic and relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. This study suggests that the microbiota gut-brain axis plays a role in the mental complications associated with IBD. Using a mouse model, the researchers found that colitis-associated microbiota rather than inflammation itself affects behavior, and that the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila is associated with specific behavioral traits. The study also indicates that brain glycine and choline metabolism are involved in regulating behavior.

Hippocampal neural stem cells and microglia response to experimental inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Summary: This study investigates the effects of acute and chronic experimental colitis on adult hippocampal neurogenesis and innate immune cell responses. It reveals that acute colitis enhances neurogenesis but with deficits in cell cycle kinetics, while chronic colitis shows normal levels of neurogenesis but deficits in neuron migration and integration. Additionally, acute colitis leads to increased inflammation in the hippocampus, while chronic colitis results in elevated levels of tissue-repairing cells and anti-inflammatory cytokines. These findings highlight potential mechanisms underlying cognitive and mood dysfunction in patients with IBD.
