The dual role of heme oxygenase in regulating apoptosis in the nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster

Terence Al L. Abaquita et al.

Summary: This study investigates the neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects of heme oxygenase (HO) in Drosophila melanogaster neurons through chronic overexpression or silencing of the ho gene. The results show that pan-neuronal ho overexpression leads to early deaths and behavioral defects, while pan-neuronal ho silencing has similar effects to the parental controls. Furthermore, the study reveals that HO can have both pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic effects depending on different conditions.

The Nuclear Translocation of Heme Oxygenase-1 in Human Diseases

Qing Yang et al.

Summary: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an enzyme involved in the degradation of heme, producing carbon monoxide (CO), free iron, and biliverdin, which can be converted to bilirubin. In addition to its canonical function, HO-1 has been found to have noncanonical functions that are independent of its enzyme activity. This review summarizes the noncanonical functions of HO-1 and its nuclear translocation in various diseases, emphasizing its critical role in tumor formation and progression. The nuclear translocation of HO-1 may serve as a potential target for the prevention and treatment of human diseases.

Neuron-glia interaction in the Drosophila nervous system

Jonas Bittern et al.

Summary: Animals have the ability to move and react to external stimuli due to the intricate neuronal network and glial cells in the nervous system. Glial cells play important roles in controlling neuronal functions, metabolic support, and cell-cell interactions, which are conserved across different species and can shed light on understanding mammalian glial cells.

Regulation of Heme Oxygenase and Its Cross-Talks with Apoptosis and Autophagy under Different Conditions in Drosophila

Terence Al L. Abaquita et al.

Summary: Heme oxygenase (HO) in the fly's brain is regulated by the circadian clock, light, age, exposure to stress, and exogenous antioxidants, and crosstalks with apoptosis and autophagy under different conditions. Curcumin feeding can restore the rhythm of HO in older flies, while flies exposed to paraquat show a protective response in the brain at specific times of the day. This suggests that HO plays a role in controlling apoptotic and autophagic processes in the brain against oxidative damage.

The Diverse Roles of Heme Oxygenase-1 in Tumor Progression

Kim Ngan Luu Hoang et al.

Summary: HO-1 is an inducible intracellular enzyme expressed in various cancers to promote tumor progression through intracellular and extracellular mechanisms. Its catabolites provide antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and cytoprotective effects within cells, while also influencing the wider tumor microenvironment to promote processes like angiogenesis, metastasis, anti-inflammation, and immune suppression. Pharmacological inhibition of HO-1 shows promise in inhibiting metastasis and promoting anti-tumor immune responses.

Nrf2-BDNF-TrkB pathway contributes to cortical hemorrhage-induced depression, but not sex differences

Honglei Ren et al.

Summary: The downregulation of Nrf2-BDNF-TrkB signaling may contribute to the development of post-stroke depression, while the Nrf2 inducer TP-500 could potentially improve depression after cortical hemorrhage. Interestingly, depression was found to be more severe in female mice compared to male mice in the study.
