Repeated assessments and predictors of nurses' shift-specific perceived workload

Suzanne R. Dhaini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the perceived workload of day and night shift registered nurses. The results showed lower perceived workload on weekends/holidays and a positive association between high patient-to-nurse ratio and perceived workload in the day shift.

Nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes: A systematic review of longitudinal studies

Chiara Dall'Ora et al.

Summary: The review identifies the association between nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes, particularly the reduced mortality rate with higher registered nurse staffing. However, the evidence is limited by risk of bias and the impact on other patient outcomes is unclear.

Predicting nurse fatigue from measures of work demands

Sarah L. Brzozowski et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of work demands on hospital nurse fatigue levels by collecting data from registered nurses and using multilevel linear regression analysis. The results indicated that organizational data and wearable sensors can be used to predict fatigue levels in hospital nurses at the end of their shifts.

Ward staffing guided by a patient classification system: A multi-criteria analysis of fit in three acute hospitals

Christina Saville et al.

Summary: The study assessed the accuracy of the Safer Nursing Care Tool in predicting staffing requirements in hospital wards and generated hypotheses about factors associated with a poor fit. Results showed that 39% of wards frequently experienced understaffing, with factors such as high turnover, older patients, and small ward size identified as potential reasons for poor fit.

The effect of data aggregation on estimations of nurse staffing and patient outcomes

Shira G. Winter et al.

Summary: Overall, the study found that shorter patient length of stay was associated with higher nurse staffing hours and lower proportions of hours provided by licensed professional nurses (LPNs), unlicensed personnel, and contract staff. The estimates of the association between nurse staffing and length of stay changed in magnitude when aggregating data over different time periods and settings, and when controlling for unobserved heterogeneity. The study concluded that estimating the association between nurse staffing and length of stay is contingent on the time period of analysis and specific methodology.
