Lung Ultrasound to Assess Pulmonary Congestion in Patients with Acute Exacerbation of COPD

Oyvind Johannessen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using lung ultrasound (LUS) to detect vertical artifacts (B-lines) for identifying concurrent heart failure (HF) in patients hospitalized with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to evaluate the association between B-lines and the risk of rehospitalization or death. The results showed that LUS was not able to effectively detect concurrent HF or predict the risk of patients hospitalized with acute exacerbation of COPD.

Summary: Lung ultrasound has shown utility as a prognostic tool for patients with acute heart failure and preserved ejection fraction. Patients with 15 or more B lines are 2.5 times more likely to be readmitted for acute heart failure compared to those with fewer B lines.

Summary: This study assessed the prognostic value of lung ultrasound in stable chronic heart failure patients, finding that patients with more B-lines were at higher risk. The number of B-lines was positively correlated with the main clinical outcomes and mortality rate.

Summary: The study investigates the use of LUSWE, a novel technique, in quantifying lung tissue elasticity for diagnosing pulmonary edema. The results of B-mode lung ultrasound and LUSWE assessments showed a decrease in pulmonary edema and lung stiffness, indicating successful reduction of fluid in the lungs.

Summary: This study evaluated whether a simplified cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-derived lung water density (LWD) quantification could predict major events in Heart Failure (HF) patients. The results showed that LWD measurement is simple, reproducible, and independently associated with HF hospitalization risk in HF patients.

Summary: An efficient Yarnball ultrashort-TE k-space trajectory combined with optimized pulse sequence design and automated image processing approach allows for fast and quantitative imaging of water density in the lung parenchyma. The method showed good reproducibility in evaluating relative lung water density in both breath-hold and free-breathing acquisitions.
