Zircon geochronology of the new dinosaur fauna in the Middle Jurassic lower Shaximiao Formation in Chongqing, SW China

Yuxuan Zhou et al.

Summary: A new dinosaur fauna dominated by sauropods and stegosaurs was recently found in Yunyang, northeastern Chongqing, southwestern China. The study used SEM, EDS, and LA-ICP-MS techniques to analyze the petrological features of a tuffaceous siltstone layer beneath the fossil-bearing layers and dated it to around 166 million years old, making it chronologically comparable to the Shunosaurus-Omeisaurus Fauna found in the central Sichuan Basin.

Burial environment and geoheritage value of dinosaur fossils of the Middle Jurassic- Puan, Yunyang, Chongqing Municipality

Hongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: The Jurassic site in Puan area with dinosaur fossils is considered to have high scientific and touristic value. The approval of a national geopark in 2020 based on the geoheritage value of the paleontological fields may promote socioeconomic development for the local population. Studying and protecting the dinosaur fossils is crucial for establishing a geopark that will enhance the protection and development of the area.
